THE POSITION

The Probation Department believes that its employees are the most valuable resource. Deputy Probation Officers in Solano County provide supervision and investigatory services of both juveniles and adults. The overarching goal of the Probation Department is to reduce recidivism through positive behavior change.

Under general supervision, Journey level Deputy Probation Officers perform professional level casework in the investigation, assessment, supervision, enforcement, diagnosis and treatment of adult and juvenile offenders; ensures community safety by monitoring offender accountability and rehabilitation, and providing supervision to those who represent the greatest risk in the community.  Some employees in the class of Deputy Probation Officer may be assigned to an armed unit in order to supervise caseloads of high-risk offenders and therefore will be, in accordance with department policy, authorized to carry firearms.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time work experience equivalent to a Deputy Probation Officer (Entry) with the County of Solano.

Note: While a degree in a specific field is not required, the possession of Bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the following fields is desired and may be a factor considered during the rating and/or selection process:  criminal justice, social work, psychology, sociology or a closely related field.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required
  • Employees assigned to an armed unit must obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification prior to assignment and must maintain the certification while assigned to the unit.

BENEFITS/ WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

Solano County offers a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits, offered through CalPERS. The County contribution for family coverage for the 2019 calendar year is $1,498.09 per month. The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage. The County may offer a supplemental contribution for employees enrolled in Employee plus Two or More coverage.

Dental and vision insurances for the employee and eligible dependents are paid 100% by the County.

Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement and contributes to Social Security.

Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 3 years. Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year.

The County observes twelve (12) fixed and two (2) half paid holidays per year. Additionally, employees in this bargaining unit receive two (2) floating paid holidays per year.

Employees are eligible to receive an additional 2.5% longevity pay, per level, after the completion of continuous service at 10, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years.

Extra-help employees who work less than 29 hours per week do not typically receive or accrue benefits of regular employees during their period of employment. All extra-help employees accrue .034 hours of Paid Time Off for every full hour worked.

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Probation Officer Requirements:

·         Incumbents must complete annual training in accordance with Title 15, Division 1 of the California Administrative Code.

·         Incumbents have limited Peace Officer powers as delineated in the California Penal Code and must therefore meet training requirements in accordance with Penal Code Section 832 within twelve (12) months of appointment.

·         Must complete the Probation Core Course certified by the California Corrections Standards Authority, or equivalent certifying agency, prior to appointment.

·         Peace Officers must meet minimum standards concerning citizenship, age, character, education and physical/mental condition as set forth in Section 1031 of the California Government Code. 

·         Must pass a physical exam and psychological evaluation as a condition of hire.

  • Firearm Proficiency:  Prior to assignment to an armed unit, employees must pass a psychological examination confirming fitness to be armed and complete required firearm training which includes: an approved course on firearms pursuant to Penal Code Section 832; a review and acknowledgement of the Department’s firearms policy; a Basic Force and Weaponry Course as selected by the Department; quarterly firearms qualification training; and other training required by the Department.
  • Independent Travel:  Incumbents are required to travel independently, for example, to meet with adult and/or juvenile offenders, their families, and other concerned parties.
  • Language Proficiency:  Some positions allocated to this class may require the applicant to speak, read and write in a language other than English.

VETERANS PREFERENCE POINTS

To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions.  A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE (GENERALLY COPY 4), MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BY THE FINAL FILING DATE.  Applicants who have a service connected disability must also submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons. 

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under conditions discharge shall receive five (5) points added to their combined score.  Disabled veterans rated at not less than 30% disability shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score.  Veteran’s preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
