Under general supervision, learns a variety of major mechanical repair tasks on gasoline and diesel powered equipment, vehicles and mobile communication equipment in the field or County garage; related duties as required.

This single position class is characterized by the responsibility to learn and increase competency in performing the more complex repair tasks on gasoline and diesel powered vehicular equipment.  Routine maintenance and servicing tasks and minor mechanical repairs, such as, replacing parts are performed with minimal direction and often independently.  This class is distinguished from Equipment Mechanic in that the latter is the journey level.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

 

1.         Works with journey level Equipment Mechanics and receives job instructions and practical training in parts fabrication, welding, diesel engine diagnosis and repair, the repair of heavy equipment transmissions and fuel and electrical systems, clutches, axles, hydraulic, suspension, brake, and steering.

 

2.         Inspects equipment and learns to increase diagnostic skills in identifying complex mechanical problems and determining extent and appropriate methods of conducting repair work.

 

3.         Operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment; performs minor repairs involving replacing parts such as pumps, points and plugs, spark plug wires and makes minor adjustments as necessary; performs general maintenance and servicing tasks on vehicles and related equipment such as lubrication, fueling, changing oil and oil filters, changing and fixing tires.

 

4.         Responds to emergency repairs in the field and may drive equipment to and from the County garage; maintains records, acts as a courier, retrieves automobile and mechanical parts, installs and maintains mobile communications equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in servicing and making minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.

 

Some knowledge of appropriate procedures, techniques and uses of power and hand tools of the trade; theory of internal combustion engines; basic mathematics including computations of decimals and percentages sufficient to understand and measure pressure readings, sizes or parts, and quantities of necessary materials.

 

Ability to learn proper practices used in all types of mechanical repairs of vehicles, construction and communications equipment; learn to recognize and diagnose various mechanical problems; use hand and power tools; improvise and make repairs under adverse field conditions; follow safe working procedures; follow oral and written instructions and prepare simple reports.

Some equipment repair experience which included repairs on heavy and automotive equipment and which demonstrates possession of and competency in requisites knowledge, skills and abilities.  Typical qualifying education and experience would be:

            Two years of experience in the maintenance and servicing of vehicles and equipment which provided the knowledge of methods, tools and materials, and equipment used in servicing and making minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B California Driver’s License with endorsements for operating a school bus and vehicles with air brakes is required.

Incumbents of this class should demonstrate necessary knowledge and abilities to be promoted to Equipment Mechanic within forty-eight (48) months of appointment.

Independent travel is required.

Incumbents must be able to work in a noisy environment and be able to perform heavy manual labor associated with equipment repair tasks.  Incumbents must work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and in an environment which may include exposure to a variety of fumes from automotive equipment and solvents.
