Introduction
This recruitment is being conducted to fill several part-time vacancies in the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. This position may require employees to work days, nights, and/or weekends.
Sheriffs Central Services Worker is the trainee-level class for both the Sheriff's Materiel Specialist series and the Sheriff's Inmate Labor Specialist series. Incumbents of this class learn to perform a variety of materiel management and/or inmate work activities that support the Sheriff's Central Services Division.Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application. TYPICAL DUTIES
- Learns how to receive, store, issue and deliver supplies, equipment and various items; learns how to verify that goods are not missing or damaged and assure that quantity and quality specifications are met; learns how to fill materiel orders and requisitions, and retrieve, issue and deliver materiel.
- Learns how to process departmental and inmate mail and shipments; learns to pick up, sort, weigh, cancel and deliver mail; records registered mail items; learns how to search mail for contraband; learns to receive money through mail and update basic ledgers, accounts and records.
- Learns how to assign, direct and monitor inmate work crews assigned to Central Services functional areas, both on and off the main Sheriff's compound.
- Learns how to train inmates regarding the technical aspects of work site assignments; learns how to complete various jail, alternative work, work furlough and other records and reports, maintain daily attendance, and complete supply and equipment usage records as assigned; learns how to document disciplinary actions and/or inmate performance issues as assigned.
- Learns to enter and retrieve computer data; may produce reports and correspondence; may attend meetings or participate on committees.
- May use specialized machines, County vehicles, heavy equipment, and/or power tools to perform assignments.

Selection Procedures
Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination. If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam: Some classifications require physical examinations. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination. The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.
Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam: Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen. The County pays for the initial drug screen.
Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
