Part-time & Temporary Opportunities

Introduction

This examination is being given to fill current vacancies in the various County departments and to establish an eligible referral pool which may be used to fill future vacancies. This classification is the entry-level clerical classification in San Joaquin County.

This recruitment will be utilized to fill part-time and temporary positions only.

Based on the nature of the assignment, candidates may be asked to work shifts, nights, weekends, holidays or pass a background investigation.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a background investigation. Some departments may also require a pre-employment drug-screen or full law enforcement background.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Greets persons entering office and answers telephones; determines purpose of visit or call; directs persons to appropriate individuals or offices; takes and transmits messages; may search for and provide general information concerning rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Obtains required information from agency clients and completes forms; waits on public counter for purpose of issuing documents.
  • Gathers, processes, and maintains information related to departmental operations, records, and files; screens source material for completeness and accuracy; adds, posts, or verifies notations.
  • Formats documents, charts, reports and forms using word processor, typewriter, or other office equipment; edits for punctuation and spelling; proofreads for accuracy and consistency.
  • Performs basic computations and calculations; may compute, collect and receipt monies and fees and issue receipts; may maintain basic ledgers and accounts; may process accounts receivable and make deposits.
  • Sorts, codes, and files correspondence, forms, records, reports, documents, and other materials; searches files to obtain requested information.
  • Receives, opens, sorts, time stamps, routes, and weighs mail; addresses, stuffs, and seals envelopes; affixes and records postage.
  • Operates a variety of standard office machines such as copiers, calculators, microfiche readers, computers, multi-line phones, and cash registers; may operate a switchboard in a large department; may dispatch vehicles.
  • Proofreads typewritten material.
  • May compose routine letters and memoranda; may type short items.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience:  One year of general office clerical work.

     

    Substitution:  One year of business training in an approved vocational training program may substitute for the above-required experience; OR b) Completion of 30 semester/45 quarter units at an accredited college or university may substitute for the above-required experience.

    KNOWLEDGE

    General office practices and procedures; personal computer systems and general office computer software; fundamental public relations techniques; basic filing and recordkeeping systems; standard language mechanics; standard correspondence and report formats; basic arithmetical operations related to clerical processes; basic cash handling procedures.

    ABILITY

    Utilize standard office procedures and equipment; operate computers and related software; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively with others; write clearly and legibly; perform basic arithmetical operations; match names and numbers.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Frequent operation of a data entry device; repetitive motion; sitting for long periods; walking; occasional standing, pushing, pulling, reaching, grabbing, bending, squatting, climbing; Lifting-Frequently 5 pounds or less; occasionally 5 to 30 pounds; Visual-Constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent decision making, concentration, and public contact; Special Requirements–Some assignments may require working weekends, nights, and/or occasional overtime; Environmental-Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.

    BENEFITS

    Part-Time Employee Benefits: Part-time employees who meet the appropriate eligibility criteria may receive health insurance benefits and step increases.

    Selection Procedures

    Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

    Testing Accommodation:  Candidates who require testing accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) must call Human Resources Division at (209) 468-3370 prior to the examination date. 

    Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

    Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam:  Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen.  The County pays for the initial drug screen.

    Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

    • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

    • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

    Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.

    Proof of Eligibility:  If you are offered a job, you will be required to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or other documents that establish your eligibility to be employed in the U.S.
