Introduction

This examination is being given to fill three vacancies in the Therapy Services department in San Joaquin General Hospital and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. THE POSITIONS

One position will be dedicated to support the Audiology unit in the Therapy Services department. The incumbent will assist the audiologist with hearing tests and related procedures for pediatric patients. Candidates for this position should be high-energy and motivated to work with pediatric patients. A bilingual Spanish/English speaker is preferred.

The other two positions will support all other units in the Therapy Services department in their mission to provide safe, effective rehabilitation for patients with a wide variety of impairments. Candidates for this position should enjoy working with both adults and children.

For all three positions, strong verbal communication, multi-tasking, and listening skills are essential. Incumbents are expected to support an efficient, positive, and patient-focused work environment and must be able to work as part of a team. Experience in supply management is preferred.

Schedule will not involve weekend or evening hours.

TYPICAL DUTIES

*Assists licensed and/or certified professional therapists in implementing therapeutic treatment activities for patients in specific therapies in accordance with the patients’ needs; helps to prepare patients for treatment; uses proper therapeutic techniques and safety precautions.

*Observes reactions of patients and reports any changes to licensed and/or certified therapists.

*Prepares and maintains treatment areas; maintains supplies; may make adjustments or minor repairs to equipment.

*Maintains accurate records, compiles information and prepares reports; may answer telephones or provide other types of departmental support.

*Attends staff meetings and in-service education classes.

*May transport patients to/from various other departments.

*May assist in conduction instructional or therapy classes for patients and/or family members in a therapeutic unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I

Experience One year of experience assisting occupational, physical, or speech therapists in the provision of rehabilitative services to patients with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities.  

OR II

Experience Six months of experience as a Nursing Assistant, Public Health Assistant or comparable class in San Joaquin County.

OR III

Experience Completion of twenty-four (24) semester units from an approved college or university with a minimum of twelve (12) units in biology, nursing, chemistry, or a related field.

KNOWLEDGE

Effective body mechanics; basic safety procedures; common physical and mental impairments and symptoms; basic anatomy and physiology; guest relations; basic record keeping principles.

ABILITY

Learn therapy procedures and equipment; communicate clearly; understand and carefully follow oral and written instructions of a technical and professional nature; explain technical procedures to others; elicit confidence of patients; maintain records and prepare written reports; assist and move patients; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; maintain excellent customer relations; use good judgment; perform essential physical/mental requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation, including, but not limited to:  standing/sitting for long periods, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, and transferring heavy patients who may require maximum assistance.

Selection Procedures

Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam:  Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen.  The County pays for the initial drug screen.

 

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

  • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

  • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
