Introduction

San Joaquin General Hospital is a 24 hour/7 day per week facility.  The Hospital Attendant will be required to work rotating shifts and weekends performing routine and repetitive tasks including: transporting patients, running errands, and providing messenger services. Though the positions will primarily be responsible for the aforementioned duties, Hospital Attendants may also assist nursing staff as lift attendants which will require lifting, transferring, turning, ambulation and helping patients with range of motion as directed.

The position will require constant walking; frequent pushing/pulling; bending/squatting; occasional stair climbing; lifting duties of  5-70+ lbs.; restraining, lifting/turning of heavy objects and/or people.

San Joaquin General Hospital is located at 500 West Hospital Road in French Camp, California.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Transports patients to hospital units, clinics, or laboratories by wheelchair or assists in transporting patients on gurneys or beds.
  • Operates messenger cart in delivering and picking up mail and other small objects.
  • Runs errands related to patient care for professional and nursing staff.
  • Obtains medical charts from Medical Records Division, delivers to requesting area, and returns to Medical Records Division.
  • Assists in moving bodies from hospital units to morgue or assists undertakers in moving bodies from morgue to hearses.
  • May deliver mail, flowers, newspapers and other items to patients.
  • May keep clinics and waiting rooms neat and orderly; may spot-clean walls, woodwork, floors or wipe up spillage.
  • May assist nursing personnel with patients as directed.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: Six months of work experience in a health care setting, which included patient contact.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Basic safety techniques; basic hospital terminology.

    ABILITY

    Understand and follow written and oral directions; communicate effectively; perform basic clerical and record-keeping work; work well with others; deal with patients tactfully and sympathetically; lift and move patients and perform moderately heavy physical work; react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; work around sick people and dead bodies.

    Selection Procedures

    Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination.  If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

    Physical Exam:  Some classifications require physical examinations.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination.  The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

    Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam:  Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment.  Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen.  The County pays for the initial drug screen.

     

    Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

    • They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

    • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

    Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
