DEFINITION

This is a temporary class in the Employment and Economic Development Department (EEDD).  Under general supervision, incumbents perform a variety of clerical and program support tasks following standardized procedures for the Summer Youth Employment and Training Program; and do related or other work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this class performs a broad range of specialized intake and program certification functions, and assists in determining preliminary eligibility for applicants in the summer youth work experience program. This class differs from Summer Youth Intake Assistant I because incumbents of that class perform basic clerical and support duties and work under the close supervision of supervisory and more experienced staff.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Assists in reviewing certification packets for completion; assists program applicants in completing application forms; maintains log of certification documents.
  • Applies special program criteria to determine the suitability of applicants for specific summer projects.
  • Assists in verifying applicants' cash aid from welfare agencies and obtaining applicants' free lunch forms from school districts; may process completed and reviewed application packets for data entry; distributes packets to staff and resubmits for data entry after review.
  • Assists in scheduling staff for community outreach events; may participate in informational presentations to small groups.
  • May assist in the scheduling and proctoring of assessment testing as required.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    License:  Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

     

    Experience:  Three months (or one program season) of experience performing intake and certification functions at a level comparable to Summer Youth Intake Assistant I.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Basic summer youth work experience program practices and activities; general record keeping and reporting methods; general language mechanics and basic arithmetic; principles and practices of public relations; general office procedures.

    ABILITY

    Learn, interpret and apply basic program eligibility rules; perform a variety of basic office procedures; present information to individuals and groups; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of individuals.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Frequent operation of keyboards; sitting for extended periods; frequent movement; driving; Lifting-Fequently 5 pounds or less; Vision-Corrected vision; frequent reading and close-up work; normal hand-eye coordination; Dexterity-Normal dexterity with frequent writing and repetitive motion and ability to operate a computer keyboard; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing and talking on the telephone and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Occasional exposure to grief; frequent public contact and decision making; frequent concentration required; Special Conditions-May require occasional overtime, weekend or evening work.
