DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs responsible computer/technical work; provides general support for staff on personal computers and related office automation issues; assists staff with office support in the Cooperative Extension; and performs other related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this class utilizes a general understanding of personal computers, website information, related office automation equipment and a general knowledge of office support. An incumbent has the ability to troubleshoot problems and works independently as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Develops and maintains Department Web page; checks statistics for any errors and corrects as needed; converts various files and pictures to PDF format and uploads to server; links files to server.
  • Provides assistance to systems users for desktop computer systems in LAN (local area network); connects new computers to network systems.
  • May install application software; may do routine troubleshooting of minor hardware or software problems; may advise management regarding basic maintenance issues.
  • Greets and assists customers in person, on the phone, on the computer or through other means of communication; learns to identify client needs, gather information, answer questions and complete forms; learns to issue documents; provides customer service in a calm, helpful and effective manner.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: Four years of general clerical and technical work, including at least two years utilizing computers at a full-journey level.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Basic principles of personal computer hardware and software; basic office automation systems; methods and techniques of modern office procedures; public relations techniques; language mechanics; standard correspondence and report formats.

    ABILITY

    Learn and use a variety of personal computer software; design and maintain web pages; follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively with others; work well under pressure; write legibly; match names and numbers. 

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Mobility-Frequent operation of computers and repetitive motion, sitting for long periods, walking; occasional standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, climbing; Lifting-Frequently 5 pounds or less; occasionally 5 to 30 pounds; Visual-Constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and eye/hand coordination; occasional depth perception and peripheral vision; Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person; Emotional/Psychological-Frequent concentration; occasional decision making, and public contact; Environmental-Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.
