DEFINITION

Under direction, this temporary/part-time position manages the aquatic program swimming pool operations and performs lifeguard duties and swim instruction; and does related or other work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Pool Manager is a one-position class that assists the aquatic program director with the daily pool operations of summer aquatic programs. The incumbent is responsible for the on-site management of pool operations including supervising and training staff, and maintaining swimming pool facilities in accordance with state and county health department guidelines.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Assists in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors and pool attendants, within county and state guidelines; conducts staff orientation and in-service training. 
  • Operates and maintains swimming pools and facilities in accordance with county and state health department guidelines pertaining to pool operation, water chemistry and safety equipment; orders equipment; supervises the general care and cleaning of the facility and the maintenance and minor repair of equipment; properly opens and/or closes facility. 
  • Treats and remedies unsafe conditions immediately; supervises the maintenance of records and reports regarding hourly patron attendance, water chemistry, daily weather conditions and incidents. 
  • Answers patron questions and concerns and provides information as needed; reports and treats all patron and pool problems; enforces the facility policies, rules and regulations; communicates to the aquatic program director and performs additional duties as assigned by the aquatic program director. 
  • Coordinates with school district maintenance personnel, county departments and other local agencies and community groups.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:  Graduation from high school or equivalent.

    Experience: Three full seasons of experience (equivalent to at least 9 months) leading, directing or providing supervision of aquatic related activities in an organized aquatic youth instruction program.


    License
    :  Possession of valid California driver’s license.

     

    Special Requirements:  Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

     

    Must be able to obtain the following certificates by the time of appointment:

     

    Certificates:  A COPY OF THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION:

     

    • Possession of current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Card or equivalent,
    • Possession of current American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety, and
    • Possession of current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer

    Fingerprint Check: California state law requires all public recreation program employees to submit to fingerprinting for the purpose of obtaining a summary of criminal convictions.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Principles and practices of program development and administration; American Red Cross Learn to Swim program, lifeguard training and first aid techniques; state and county health department standards pertaining to pool operation; principles and practices.

    ABILITY

    Lead, evaluate and supervise the work of staff; administer and teach swimming classes; communicate effectively with diverse groups of patrons, including children; keep records and write reports; promote aquatic programs; coordinate staffing schedules; conduct specialized staff training; provide information to the public about pool and facility regulations, policies and procedures; perform pool maintenance; administer first aid and CPR as needed.
