The following information describes the civil service classification for which applications are being solicited. Make sure you read the entire announcement before completing the application form.

The qualified applicant pool resulting from this recruitment will be used to fill all current departmental vacancies in the 9940 Pre-Apprentice Automotive Mechanic classification.
 

APPOINTMENT TYPE:  Temporary Exempt, As-Needed – These positions are not to exceed nine (9) weeks, sixteen (16) hours per week, on-the-job training.  Exempt employees are considered "at will" and serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under immediate supervision, the 9940 Pre-Apprentice Automotive Mechanic performs semi-skilled trainee work designed to introduce career options and role models in connection with the operation, maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles. As part of a Pre-Apprenticeship program, incumbents learn about the work environment, required skilled mechanical work, and real-life experience to help them find employment as an apprentice and eventually as a journey mechanic. Positions allocated to the 9940 Pre-Apprentice Automotive Mechanic job code function as trainees.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
• Observes and assists repairs and overhauls of a variety of mechanical equipment.
• Observes and assists the maintenance, removal, repair, overhaul installation and tuning of engines.
• Observes and assists the maintenance, repair, overhaul, adjustment, installation and calibration of automotive, diesel, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicle fuel systems.
• Observes and assists the maintenance and installation of lighting circuits and auxiliary actuating circuits.
• Observes and assists the maintenance, repair, overhaul and adjustment of vehicle brake systems, vehicle cooling systems, vehicle chassis, wheel suspension, and articulated bus suspension systems.
• Observes and assists the operation of shop equipment and machine tools.
• Observes and assists the troubleshooting of equipment problems.
• Observes and assists on a road call.
• Observes and assists the completion of paper and electronic forms and records on work performed, time and parts used. 

Nature of work: May require exposure to disagreeable weather conditions and hazardous work situations; handling hazardous materials and waste; occasional lifting heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds and carrying them for moderate distances; wearing required safety equipment, such as a respirator or dust mask; wearing specialized clothing such as mechanic coveralls, safety vest, etc.; walking or standing for extended periods of time. Some positions may require the use of a computer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment; AND

2. Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D or High School Proficiency Examination) within three (3) months of appointment; AND

3. Possess a valid California Driver’s License within three (3) months of appointment.

Notes:
Must successfully pass the City and County of San Francisco pre-employment medical and drug test.

Proof of age indicating that you are 18 years of age or older.  Copy of a valid California Identification Card or Driver’s License is acceptable.

Requires possession of a High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D or High School Proficiency Examination) and obtaining a valid California Driver’s License within three (3) months of appointment.  Failure to obtain the appropriate driver's license within the specified time period may be cause for separation.

MEDICAL EXAM:
Candidates who are being considered for appointment for positions, may be required to pass a medical examination. Candidates who cannot meet the medical requirement will not be allowed to proceed. The medical examination will be administered only to those applicants who are being considered for appointment.

DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT:
Applicants for positions in this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by Local 1414, are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident.

Note: The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has determined that Class 9940 Pre-Apprentice Automotive Mechanic is a “safety-sensitive” position, under regulations issued by the Federal Transit Administration (49 CFR Part 655). Federal law requires that all transit employees who perform safety-sensitive functions be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing. All applicants for safety-sensitive positions shall undergo urine drug testing prior to employment and within 90 days prior to performing safety-sensitive functions for the first time. Receipt by the SFMTA of a negative test result is required prior to the employee being placed on the payroll. A positive, adulterated, negative dilute or substituted test will result in a decision not to hire, and the applicant’s name will be removed from the list of eligibles for safety-sensitive positions. The SFMTA will not consider hiring any person who tested positive, adulterated, substituted or refused to submit to testing for a minimum of two years following the positive test.  

In addition, each applicant who has worked for a Department of Transportation (DOT)-regulated employer(s) within the last two years will be required to sign a consent form, prior to appointment, authorizing SFMTA to obtain information from his/her prior employers concerning his/her drug and alcohol test history. Each applicant will also be required to provide SFMTA with information regarding whether, during the last two years, the applicant tested positive or refused to test on any pre-employment drug or alcohol test administered by an employer to which the applicant applied for, but did not obtain, safety-sensitive transportation work covered by DOT drug and alcohol testing rules. SFMTA will not hire any applicant for a safety-sensitive position who fails to provide this information or fails to provide written consent for the release of information from prior employers.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
