The Department of Technology is the centralized technology services provider within San Francisco City & county government, delivering technology infrastructure and services to approximately 33,000 employees and 800,000 residents. The department has an annual operating budget of over $130M and contains over 200 employees. Core service areas include: Infrastructure and Operations, Technology Security, Service Delivery & Management, Enterprise Applications, Project Management Office, Public Safety Systems & Wiring, Technology Administration, Policy & Governance and IT Public Communications. The Office of Civic Innovation (OCI) is a small but mighty team in the Department of Technology.

Position: 

Under supervision, performs semi-skilled line work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of communication and traffic and street lighting systems, transit power lines, and high voltage overhead and underground electrical transmission lines; and performs related duties as required.

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Digs holes and trenches for installing wood, concrete, and steel poles and laying underground cables.

  • Assists in the replacement of fire alarm boxes, police call boxes, traffic and street lighting systems, and overhead and underground wires.

  • Assists line crew to disassemble and install foundations for poles, structures, and distribution and transmission towers.

  • Assists line crew in assembling poles and cross arms; trims trees and removes other obstructions along overhead line right-of-way; preparing materials.

  • Assists cable splicers and line crew on public safety underground jobs. Sets up job sites and prepare splicing materials.

  • Performs general housekeeping at maintenance yards, line trucks, and job sites including the cleaning and caring of hand tools and pneumatic tools (e.g. pavement breaker).

Job Type: 

The Department of Technology is seeking to fill three (3) Temporary Exempt - Full Time 7432 positions. This Temporary Exempt - Full Time (Category 18) position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. This position has an anticipated duration of no more than three (3) years and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.

Work Location: 

Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at various City Agencies throughout the City of San Francisco as well some remote CCSF facilities outside of the City and County of San Francisco.  The incumbents primary reporting and dispatch location will be 200 Paul Ave SF CA, 94124.

Nature of Work: 

Candidate must be willing to work a 40- hour week as determined by the department. Travel within San Francisco may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Possession of a high school diploma or proof of successful completion of an equivalency test (G.E.D or California High School Proficiency Examination); AND

Experience:

Two (2) years of full time verifiable general electrical and mechanical work experience in maintenance/construction.

License or Certificate:

  • Possession and maintenance of, or the ability to obtain and maintain, a current valid California Class C driver license.

Selection Procedures

Supplemental Questionnaire (Qualifying and Informational):
