JOB TYPE: This Temporary Exempt – As Needed (Category 16) position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. This position has an anticipated duration of 1040 hours per fiscal year and this position will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.
WORK LOCATION: Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the San Francisco Public Works, 2323 Cesar Chavez, San Francisco, CA 94124. However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as required.
NATURE OF WORK: Nature of work: requires some physical effort and manual dexterity in the use of the fingers, limbs and body; lifting and carrying up to 75lbs; wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); working in adverse weather or working conditions such as dust, cold temperatures, loud or continuous noise; attending specialized training classes, and working any shift including: days, swings, nights, weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime. Additionally, incumbents may be required to work at various elevated heights/stories.
POSITION: Under general supervision, the essential functions of the Glazier include performing skilled work in cutting, assembling, fitting, setting, fastening, installing, repairing and maintaining glass and plastic sheets and window screens in windshields (MUNI transit vehicles), windows, mirrors, skylights, doors, desktops, showcases, frames, aluminum extrusion window frames; removing and installing window film or tinted applications; and operating a variety of shop machinery and equipment in connection with glazing activities. Incumbents may be required to perform other related duties in addition to the ones listed above.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Cuts, assembles, fits, sets, fastens and installs glass, plastic sheets and window screens in windows, skylights, doors, showcases, frames, aluminum extrusion window frames and automotive and transit vehicles.
- Repairs and maintains broken and leaking windows and skylights.
- Cuts, grinds and installs glass, desktops and mirrors.
- Operates a variety of shop machinery and equipment in connection with glazing activities such as wet sanders, drill presses, edge finishing sanders, powered hand sanders and saws, etc.
- Documents work performed by completing work orders and daily work log.
- Installs aluminum storefront and glaze.
- Drives a vehicle to work sites.
- Removes and installs window film or tinted applications.
- Operates a forklift to transport materials.
Completion of a recognized five (5) year glazier apprenticeship program.
Two (2) years of experience as a journey level glazier.
License and Certification:
Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license.
Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.

1. MEDICAL EXAMINATION:
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential function of this job.
2. MEDICAL TESTING: Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass the TB testing Process.
3. SECURITY CLEARANCES AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS:
Positions in this classification may require that successful candidates who become eligible for appointment may be required to go through a background investigation to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment in this classification. Factors considered in the investigation may include employment history, use of illegal/controlled substances. Reasons for rejection based on this investigation may include, but not limited to: applicable convictions, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations, falsification of application materials and/or other relevant factors. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination.

The City and County of San Francisco’s Substance Abuse Policy, in compliance with the Department of Transportation Omnibus Transportation Employer Testing Act of 1991 employing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations, requires drug and alcohol testing for employees in “safety-sensitive” positions. Some 7338 Electrical Line Worker positions qualify as “safety-sensitive” as defined by the (FMCSA) and FTA regulations. The selected applicants for “safety-sensitive” positions will be required to pass a Pre-Employment drug test prior to appointment and shall be subject to Random, Post-Accident, Reasonable Suspicion, Return-To-Duty, and Follow-Up testing during employment. Prior to appointment to an FMCSA “safety-sensitive position, each applicant who has participated in a DOT drug and alcohol testing program within the immediately preceding two years will be required to sign a consent form authorizing the City to contact his/her prior employers concerning his/her drug and alcohol test history.”
