The Port of San Francisco is an enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco and is governed by a Commission of five members appointed by the Mayor. The Port Commission is responsible for overseeing a broad range of waterfront commercial, maritime, and public access facilities that are held in public trust for the people of California. The Port’s jurisdiction covers approximately 7.5 miles of waterfront land from Pier 98, near Hunter’s Point in the southern part of San Francisco, to Fisherman’s Wharf in the northern part of the City.

The Port’s diverse business portfolio includes over 550 ground, commercial, retail, office, industrial and maritime industrial leases including cargo shipping, ship repair, excursion boats, ferry boats, fishing and fish processing/distribution, tourism, filming, harbor services, and cruise-shipping. With some of the most modern and flexible shipping-terminal facilities on the West Coast, as well as naturally deep water, the Port can handle just about any type of cargo, including containers, break-bulk, neo-bulk, automobiles, and project cargoes.

The Port of San Francisco has many internationally recognized landmarks such as Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, the Exploratorium, the Ferry Building and AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. With its unique and historic properties, the Port is home to a variety of tenants and uses.

The Port Commission over the last five decades has led a remarkable transformation of the Port; maintaining its industrial maritime heritage while developing new uses, including commercial and public activities, that have helped San Francisco remain one of the most visited and popular cities on the globe.

The Port of San Francisco is seeking student trainees for a two positions for two different roles, including supporting the Planning and Environment Staff and supporting the Engineering staff.

Selected students will be hired 10-20 hours/week) during the school year and on a full-time basis for approximately 10-12 weeks during the summer. Exact starting dates and number of hours may depend on college schedules.

Planning & Environment Intern Position
The Student Planning Trainee will provide support to Port planning and environment staff currently working on a variety of projects that implement the Port’s Waterfront Land Use Plan. Duties may include the following: conducting research, preparing graphics for planning and development projects, developing and maintaining GIS based databases; preparing materials for public meetings and community outreach; architectural drafting, assisting in facilitating and providing support for public meetings; assist in the evaluation of projects for consistency with Port design policies and the secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, assist writing tasks, market research, review of comparable projects, develop and manipulate spreadsheet proformas and assisting in developing and maintaining the Port’s web site.

Engineering Intern Position
The Student Engineering Trainee will assist with the development of a Geographic Information System based on the agency’s enterprise level data from many of its Divisions. This position requires accurate data entry into the fields of related tables, the creation and editing of geometric features, and the design of map layouts. Essential skills include familiarity with Windows, Excel, AutoCAD Map 3D and ArcMap, as the position requires navigation to file pathways across multiple network locations, compliance with file saving conventions, the examination, comparison and update of Excel spreadsheets/tables, the use of the GIS functionality of AutoCAD Map3D to connect to an Oracle data store in order to access and edit features, and the use of ArcMap’s symbol editing/layout creation tools.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited community college or university with four (4) semesters completed towards a Baccalaureate degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Land Use Planning, Urban or Environmental Design, Graphic Design, Geology or related field.



Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited university completing coursework leading to a Master’s degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture or Landscape Architecture, Geography, Business Administration, Graphic Design or related field.


Applicants must be returning to their academic program in Fall 2018.


Applicants must be a US citizen or have an alien registration (green) card or a foreign student with legal work permit prior to filing application.


Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Applicants with skills in Adobe graphic products and/or AutoCAD, or an interest in learning such programs

- GIS knowledge or experience

- Architectural and landscape design as well as historic preservation principles and practices.

- Microsoft Excel

- Independent analytical and writing abilities

- Comfortable working both in team settings and independently with appropriate supervision.



Interns must maintain enrollment at an accredited community college or university for continued employment as a Planning & Development Intern.


This position may require the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the Port’s Maritime Transportation System (MTS).  Candidates for employment with the Port whose job duties require unescorted MTS access are required upon appointment to undergo a terrorist threat assessment including FBI fingerprints and immigration check to determine eligibility for security clearance.

Selection Procedures

The selection process will include the evaluation of applications and assessment of candidates' relative job-related knowledge, skills and abilities by oral interview.  Only those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the Port will be invited to participate in the interview process.  Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed an invitation to interview. 

Conviction History
