APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Exempt - Full Time – This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Livable Streets mission is to create safe and inviting streets and sidewalks for all who walk and use a bicycle, focusing on projects that advance San Francisco’s Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic deaths in San Francisco. This work unit is responsible for delivering bicycle, pedestrian, and traffic calming projects on time and within budget through coordination with other City departments, including Recreation and Park, City Planning, and Public Works. Successful delivery of these projects requires teamwork and consensus-building within the agency, with stakeholders, and with elected officials, as well as a thorough understanding of how bicycle and pedestrian projects affect transit, accessibility, and traffic operations.

  

As part of the SFMTA’s Livable Streets Sub-Division, this position will work closely with transportation engineers and planners to develop, update, and track CAD drawings that support the implementation of streetscape, bicycle, pedestrian, traffic calming, and signal projects throughout the city of San Francisco. In doing so, the position will support SFMTA efforts to achieve safety and operational goals associated with the city’s street network. Will be part of a team of 3-4 people working on CAD drawings.

 

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Prepares civil (primarily transportation-related) drawings using computer-aided software products such as AutoCAD in compliance with engineering drafting standards; collects and calculates field and departmental data needed for the preparation of designs and drawings; assists in the preparation of cost and quantity estimates for engineering projects and site investigations; indexes, reproduces, and maintains engineering documents stored in databases or spreadsheets in hard copy form; applies mathematical and other engineering computations as required in the course of performing work; operates and replaces media on equipment used in the course of performing work; responds orally to inquiries and requests for information from the general public, contractors, and other agencies; prepares memos, letters, and field reports in the course of performing work; may supervise the work of others.

 

Incumbent may be required to drive a motor vehicle to and from various work sites.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Four years of verified civil (including structural and/or transportation), or electrical, or mechanical technical engineering drafting experience using computer-aided software products such as AutoCAD, Map 3D, Civil 3D and/or Revit, to prepare engineering drawings and other engineering graphic material, at least two years of which must have been in a position with duties comparable to those of Class 5362 Engineering Assistant. This experience must have been obtained within the last seven (7) years;

2. Possession of a valid California driver license.

Substitution: Possession of a Certificate of Completion in drafting or Computer-Aided Drafting from an accredited college or technical/vocational school may be substituted for six (6) months of the four years of required experience.

One year full-time experience is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time experience.

 

The stated desirable qualifications below may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring. 

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Six (6) months (or more) of experience using AutoCAD, Civil 3D and/or MAP 3D software applications in preparing engineering drawings and other engineering graphic materials.

• Experience preparing striping drawings and/or sign plans for construction.

• Skill and experience using and improving tracking and filing systems.

• Good attention to detail, including experience working successfully under deadlines.

• Good communication skills, including ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and engineers.

• Interest in transportation engineering, including bicycle and pedestrian facility design.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Benefits

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, ranging from 7.5%-13.25% of compensation.
