Appointment Type
This recruitment is for a Temporary Exempt (TEX), as-needed appointment. This position is exempt from the Civil Service examination process pursuant to the San Francisco Charter Section 10.104 and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. This position is seasonal and will not result in an eligible list for a permanent appointment.

About Us
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) provides opportunities for San Francisco residents and guests alike to gather, play, learn, relax and enjoy nature. We maintain more than 220 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces in the City, including two outside of city limits: Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierra. A vacation getaway for generations of families, as well as for first-time guests, Camp Mather remains RPD's inclusive, rustic, off-the-grid destination for recreation and relaxation.

Each summer, RPD operates Camp Mather, a rustic family campground located near Yosemite National Park, approximately 3 hours east of San Francisco. Each week, about 500 campers enjoy a week-long stay at Camp Mather; enjoying a full range of recreation activities such as a supervised swimming pool and a lake for water activities, supervised recreation programs, hiking, and evening campfire entertainment. Guests stay in cabins, and enjoy 3 delicious meals each day, served cafeteria style with a full salad bar and excellent service.

Position Description:

 

Camp Assistants primarily work in the Dining Hall executing 3 meals per day for guests. In addition, may also be required to prepare food in the kitchen, clean cabins and/or bath houses, transport items around camp and sort recycling. The position requires a high level of physical effort as well as having strong customer-service skills.

Examples of Essential Duties:

  • Works steam tables, serves food, buses tables, washes and stacks dishes, and cleans flatware;
  • Cleans cabins and other camp facilities, including sweeping and mopping floors, washing windows and scrubbing washrooms;
  • Cleans the campgrounds;
  • Participates in the staff talent show and staff versus guest athletic activities;
  • Unloads and loads trucks, and moves furniture and supplies; and
  • Assists the Chef, Assistant Cooks, and Food Service Workers as needed.

 Working Conditions at Camp Mather:

  • Housing and Meals: during employment, FREE meals and housing is provided to camp employees. Camp staff live in shared housing with other camp staff.
  • Nature of work includes working both indoors and outdoors, exposure to sun and high temperatures, and will regularly encounter bugs and insects.
  • Work Schedule: The workweek is six (6) days, comprising of small shifts throughout the day. Shifts includes weekends and evenings.  Overtime may be required.
  • Work Location: Camp Mather is located in the High Sierra near Yosemite National Park about 3 hours east of San Francisco.
  • Transportation: Camp Mather employees  are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from Camp Mather. Parking is available for personal vehicles. Public transportation and Rideshare Apps (Uber/Lyft) is not a reliable source because of our remote location.
  • Kitchen staff will be working with various cleaning chemicals as part of the position requirements.

Available Work Assignments:

Camp Mather operates in three phases. Hiring priority is given to those who can work the high season AND either early crew or wrap-up crew, in part or in full.

  • April 18 to May 29 (Early Crew)
  • May 30 to August 14 (High Season)
  • August 15 to September 28 (Wrap-up Crew)

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Applicant must be age 18 or older at the time of hire;
  • Possess a High School diploma or equivalent at the time of hire;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds;
  • Ability to work with and live around coworkers and guests;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form;
  • Ability to maintain a neat and clean appearance and provide great customer service.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • ServSafe Certificate or California Food Handler Card;
  • CPR-FPR certification;
  • AED certification;
  • First Aid certification;
NOTE: Selected candidates will be required to obtain a ServSafe certificate or California Food Handler Card prior to appointment.

    Verification of required education typically must be a photocopy of the degree or transcript from an accredited college or university. Verification of required license/certification typically must be a photocopy of the license/certificate including the name of the issuing agency as well as the name of the license/certificate holder, license/certificate number, and expiration date.

    Selection Plan

    Disaster Service Workers

    All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
