Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center 's General SNF/Rehab-Restorative Program is currently accepting applications for three (3) as needed positions in class 2554 Therapy Aide.  

Under immediate supervision by the Nursing Department, the Therapy Aide assists in administering treatment as prescribed by the Rehabilitation Department. Essential duties include:

  • Accompanies or transports patients to and from the therapeutic units;
  • Assists in lifting and positioning patients for treatment;
  • Performs passive range of motion, active range of motion, splint/brace assistance, amputation/prosthesis care, activity of daily living training (e.g. bed mobility, transfer, walking, exercise, communication);
  • Observes patients during their treatment and reports any unusual and/or adverse changes in the residents' conditions to Charge Nurse to relay the information to the Resident Care Team;
  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains equipment and prepares treatment area for resident care;
  • Assists in assembling therapeutic devices such as splints and crutches;
  • Prepares and maintains routine records and charts of residents' treatments provided;
  • Monitors equipment, linen and supply inventories;
  • Provides treatments in the Wellness gym, on the neighborhoods (unit-based) and in the aquatics pool, under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse with initial recommendations and follow up consultations provide by the licensed therapist; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Note:  This applicant pool may be used by other Department of Public Health locations if positions exist within a six month period.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience providing direct and indirect patient/resident care equivalent to the duties described above in a licensed health agency, acute care hospital, rehabilitation unit, home health agency, outpatient clinic or long term care facility

Current enrollment in a Physical or Occupational Therapy program or completion of at least fifteen (15) semester units of the required prerequisite courses for admission into a Physical or Occupational Therapy program may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience described above.

NOTE: Prerequisite courses for admission into a Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy school are defined as:  Inorganic Chemistry, General Physics, Human or Comparative Anatomy, Human Physiology, General Microbiology, Abnormal Psychology, Statistics, Exercise Physiology, Motor Learning or Motor control, Biomedical Ethics, Developmental Psychology or Motor Development and Neuroscience.  

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate Requirement / Provision:

Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment for all positions.  Eligibles who do not possess such a certification may participate in this examination process and be appointed to a position(s), but will be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of hire date and maintain validity throughout length of employment.  A photocopy of the valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be provided to the appropriate supervisor of the appointment within the allotted time frame.  Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of valid certification within two (2) weeks of hire date and throughout length of employment may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.

Selection Procedures


The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Conviction History

As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:

Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing.
