TYPE OF APPOINTMENTTemporary Exempt As-Needed, not to exceed 6 months or 1,040 hours. These positions are excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. 

The Anatomic Pathology Department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is accepting applications for two (2) as-needed, temporary positions in class 2520 Morgue Attendant.

SHIFTS: Hours to cover absent staff, and fills in on short notice on the Weekends and Holidays 9:30am to 4:00pm; M-F 7:30am to 4:00pm; and M-F 4:00pm-8:00pm shift. Both positions may be offered, but are not obligated to fill.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Transfers remains of deceased persons and surgical specimens to autopsy room and prepares bodies for post-mortem examinations; prepares and releases bodies to morticians, keeps morgue and autopsy room and equipment in clean and orderly condition; and under supervision assists with autopsy procedures; and performs related duties as required.

Nature of work involves considerable physical effort and manual dexterity.

NATURE OF POSITION: Rabies exposure is possible.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Brings bodies of deceased persons from ward to morgue; wraps bodies in sheets and places in refrigerated compartment; checks storage box for proper temperature and anatomical position and proper identification of body.

2. Prepares bodies for post-mortem examination and pathological study by cleaning and washing, using necessary solutions; sets up instruments and containers for autopsy; places bodies on autopsy tables.

3. Prepares bodies for release to mortician after post-mortem examination by sewing up cavities, aspirating fluids and cleaning bodies.

4. Picks up tissue specimens from surgery and other clinics and performs specimen grossing, and specimen disposal or releases as requested.

5. Receives animal specimens and prepares them for examination, performs specimen dissection, and prepares tissue for testing at a reference laboratory.

6. Cleans autopsy room and sterilizes instruments and equipment; delivers soiled linen to laundry, returns clean linen to morgue and storage room, and performs disposal of chemical and biological waste.

The 2520 Morgue Attendant performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent courses with concentration in Biological Sciences and Anatomy from an accredited college or university; AND

2. Six (6) months of experience (equivalent to 1,000 hours) conducting autopsies or surgical grossing in a hospital or medical examiner setting.

**Requires Rabies vaccine (total 3 vaccinations)

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Disaster Service Workers

Note on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing.
