Appointment Type
Temporary Exempt (TEX) full-time, up to 24 months. This position is exempt from Civil Service rules pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section 10.104 and serves at the discretion of Appointing Officer. Appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service Examination process for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. 

Position Description
The SFO Environmental Policy and Sustainability Program is designed to help trainees who are interested in the environmental and sustainability field by building practical, applied experience across  a wide range of sustainability related programs that will help the Airport achieve its zero net energy, zero waste, and carbon neutral goals.  The trainee will be provided with opportunities for on-the-job experience and trained to develop professional competences while working under close guidance and supervision from the Sustainability Director and Zero Waste Specialist.  The anticipated duration of this training is 24 months.

The Sustainability Analyst Trainee will be trained to help SFO achieve its Strategic Plan Objectives through the following work scope:

Zero Net Energy: Assist in optimizing the Airport’s Green Business Program, particularly with energy related measures, by creating tracking mechanisms and updating the Program’s standards to reflect the most progressive and up-to-date policies in CA, SF, and SFO. Liaise with newly activated SF Department of Environment energy auditor to ensure the auditor’s services are completed to SFO’s standards. Assist the ZERO Committee with ensuring tenants adhere to SFO’s energy related rules and regulations, specifically by verifying the purchase of solely ENERGY STAR rated appliances prior to construction.

Zero Waste: Support the development and establishment of new policies, tracking mechanisms, and services within SFO’s Zero Waste Concessions program, specifically those ensuring all tenants comply with new compostable food ware and plastic-free water bottle requirements. Continue to provide support and training to tenants and manufacturers during this transition as well as monitor compliance over time.

Carbon Neutrality: Support building decarbonization through auditing, equipment inventories and related analyses.  The analyst trainee will participate in structured on-the-job training program and carry out routine research in connection with the airport's Triple-Zero Carbon Neutrality and Sustainability Project.

The essential functions of this position include:

  • Green Business – Support SFO’s program growth by: a)Creating an Energy Efficiency Tracking System to account for energy savings opportunities both across campus and within tenant leased spaces.  Absent having PUC incentives or deemed rebates, this is a critical step to motivate tenants to make onsite energy efficiency investments.  b)Revising the current Program Standards to more accurately reflect “beyond code” operational measures for tenants that align with and push towards SFO “stretch goals.” c)Support onboarding of SF Department of Environment Energy Auditor (through MOU) including tracking/tool development, scheduling, and tenant outreach/engagement.
  • Zero Energy + Resilient Outcomes (ZERO) Committee – Amplify the ZERO Committee Toolkit by performing: a)Plan checks – confirming ENERGY STAR appliances are specified and installed. b)Developing an airport standard for Terminal Tenant Decarbonization –all electric base building utility infrastructure and space conditioning, commercial kitchen, hot water heating applicants.   
  • Zero Waste Concessions – Conduct Food ware + Water Bottle Compliance Site Visits to track, quantify and support tenants in their transition to required food/beverage containers. Perform all daily and ongoing activities to ensure successful delivery and expansion of the SFO Unites Against Hunger (food donation) Program. 
  • General - Monitoring, Tracking, and Reporting on each program area and as needed.

Nature of Work
Involves extensive computer work requiring keyboarding, prolonged sitting, and working in front of computer monitor; and ability to communicate and interact effectively with all internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.  

Desirable Qualifications
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred to hiring.

  • Prior work experience with: a)developing zero wast policies, audits, programs; b)conducting energy audits and developing efficiency services and incentives; c)preparing greenhouse gas emissions inventories and climate action plans; d)developing succint and impactful sustainability analyses and plan.
  • Academic research on the topics of energy, water, waste, transportation and/or carbon.

Selection Procedures

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to participate in the oral/performance interview.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Conviction History

As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
