The mission of the San Francisco Department of Elections (Department) is to provide election-related services to all City residents and to conduct elections that are free, fair, and functional. Serving more than 500,000 registered voters, the Department administers elections in an open and transparent manner, making a concerted effort at all times to inspire public confidence in the integrity of elections in the City.
In preparation for the November 3, 2020, General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions to assist with various tasks occurring at the Department’s Pier 31 warehouse facility. These tasks include preparation and distribution of election supplies, materials, and voting equipment used at in-person voting locations.
Position Schedule and Hours
Tentative start date for this position will be between September 14, 2020 and October 19, 2020, and will run until several weeks after Election Day, November 3, 2020; exact start and end dates will be determined by the operational needs of the Department.
Work hours are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, work hours will vary widely in accordance with the demands of the election cycle and will range between 40 and 70 hours per week. The person in this position must be available to work overtime both during the week and on weekends as necessary. Overtime hours will be paid at 1.5 the hourly rate.
This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12 month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. The ideal candidate will have the ability to follow directions, relating both to work and to worksite rules; stay focused while working accurately and consistently; and have diligent attention to safety and detail. Work is performed in the warehouse with limited temperature controls. Workers may be exposed to hot/cold temperatures, loud noises, dust, fumes, and/or odors.
The position requires continuous use of hands and arms; standing on concrete warehouse flooring, with occasional walking and sitting; unloading and carrying election materials, containers, voting equipment and other miscellaneous items weighing up to 75 lbs; pushing and pulling dollies with loaded bags and containers that can weigh up to 150 lbs; frequent bending when handling large items or containers.
Typical tasks include:
- Sorting, staging, and transporting equipment and supplies
- Moving materials from receiving area to the designated storage areas
- Loading and unloading vehicles
- Placing materials and supplies into processing containers according to predetermined sequences
- Assisting in the counting of physical inventory
- Operating warehouse equipment such as hand-trucks, pallet jacks, and/or mobile carts
- Operating city vehicles and/or 16 foot long delivery trucks,
- Driving to and from predetermined locations as required to move or deliver equipment and materials
- Performing other similar duties, as assigned.
In addition to the above minimum qualifications, applicants must have a valid California Driver's license and a clean DMV record.

- Excellent work ethics and sense of responsibility
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to follow instructions, and work on multiple simultaneous projects
- Flexibility, tolerance, and stamina for tedious tasks and occasional long hours
- Forklift certification or the ability to become certified forklift operator
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Six (6) months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.
License and Certification:
Any one of the following may substitute for the required experience:
Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR
Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program (as designated on the job announcement).
