Department:

The Department of Technology is the centralized technology services provider within San Francisco City & county government, delivering technology infrastructure and services to approximately 33,000 employees and 800,000 residents.  The department has an annual operating budget of over $130M and contains over 200 employees.  Core service areas include: Infrastructure and Operations, Technology Security, Service Delivery & Management, Enterprise Applications, Project Management Office, Public Safety Systems & wiring, Technology Administration, Policy & Governance and IT Public Communications.

Our award-winning Network Engineering team has been recognized for setting the standard for excellence among the City. We are a service-oriented and dynamic group consisting of 20 members, who is both responsible for their own success but is firmly committed to our mission.

In alignment with our vision of serving as a model for good government, ensuring financial integrity and improving effectiveness we have embarked on a mission to upgrade the City’s Wide Area Network to ensure the city’s data is secure and will continue to keep up with today’s technologies. Currently we are involved in projects with timelines to finish in the year 2023 and beyond. On any given workday we work with multiple city agencies, vendors and our own PMO team to provide technical support and solutions to all parties involved.  

Under direct supervision of the Network Team Manager, the Network Engineer Assistant is responsible for assisting with the continuous improvement of the City's Wide Area Network, Local Area Network and Data Centers including the Disaster Recovery Remote Data Center to include planning, management, security, and stability of the enterprise.  The incumbent will provide assistance to IS Engineer Journey – Principals and other members of the team.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist in determining requirements for the development or enhancement of large complex systems or networks that serve as a data processing backbone for City and County of San Francisco's information technologies infrastructures. Assist in research and conduct feasibility studies on new technologies.
  • Assist in design, plan, integrate, test, implement, document and enhance the physical and logical components of a large complex system or network. This may involve the analysis and evaluation of systems software, hardware and communications strategies.
  • Assist in systems integration for interoperability over dissimilar platforms and technologies. This may involve the integration of various protocols, systems software, hardware and communications platforms.
  • Assist in Analyzing, detection, and identifying to correct complex systems software or hardware deficiencies.
  • Provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of corrective measures; this may involve site visits, telephone assistance, remote systems or network management, and participation in technical committees.
  • Assist to Plan, implement and maintain upgrades/updates/fixes for core operating systems and their related components, without negative impact to the overall availability and reliability of the enterprise systems/networks.
  • Document procedures and troubleshooting techniques related to systems/networks software and hardware; assist to develop and review documentation prior to general distribution.
  • Assist to Install, monitor and maintain hardware across multiple data centers and City Buildings with expert level of racking and cabling including labeling descriptions on switch ports and media cabling.
  • Have excellent communications skills to be able to work with team members, other DT divisions, City Agencies and Vendors

Job Type:

The Permanent Exempt - Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer.  The anticipated duration of this project position is thirty-six (36) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.

Nature of Work:

Incumbent must be willing to work a 40-hour work week as this is a full-time position as determined by the department.  Travel within San Francisco and beyond may be required. City vehicles are generally used for all official City business.

Work Location:

Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, One South Van Ness Avenue, 2nd Floor.  However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

An associate degree in computer science, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field].

Substitution:
Experience in analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/ forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.
Completion of the 1010 Information Systems Trainee Program may be substituted for the required degree.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • 2 years’ experience with Cisco routers and switches
  • CCENT-CCNA or CCNP
  • Experience with Project Management
  • Experience with DCIM, Excel, Visio and SolarWinds Monitoring software
  • Experience with rack/stack/ and fiber optic cabling and Ethernet cabling
  • Valid CA Driver License
