Introduction

The Department of Technology is the centralized technology services provider within San Francisco City & County government, delivering technology infrastructure and services to approximately 33,000 employees and 800,000 residents. The department has an annual operating budget of over $130M and contains over 260 employees. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under general direction, is responsible for the proper dispatching of all fire and emergency apparatus in answering fire and other emergency alarms; plans, assigns, and supervises the work of subordinate personnel engaged in such activities; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for interpreting and enforcing existing methods and procedures in connection with dispatching fire apparatus and emergency equipment; making occasional contacts with other departmental personnel in connection with fire alarm dispatching matters; supervising the preparation and maintenance of ordinary operating reports and records.

 

  • Prepares tour-of-duty schedules for subordinate dispatchers;
  • Observes and supervises the dispatching of equipment to adherence to departmental rules and procedures;
  • Supervises the maintenance of all records and statistics pertaining to fire department response to fires;
  • Prepares summaries of equipment dispatched and repairs and tests made to the fire alarm system;
  • Train new fire dispatchers in the use of fire alarm equipment and methods of testing equipment;
  • Supervises the testing of all fire alarm equipment; 
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma

Experience:
Three (3) years of experience as a fire alarm dispatcher

OR

Equivalent combination of training and experience

Notes:

1] One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hours work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedures

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying)

Applicants will be prompted to complete a supplemental questionnaire as part of the online employment application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience, training and/or licensure, consistent with the information provided on their application. The supplemental questionnaire will be used to evaluate whether applicants meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. The information in the supplemental questionnaire will not be scored and is collected for informational purposes..

Written Examination: (Weight: 100%)

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an written examination to determine their relative knowledge, skills, and abilities in job-related areas for the 8236 classification which may include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of the fire alarm system and equipment of the city; streets and fire station locations; fire department rules and regulations covering the handling fire apparatus; the methods and techniques used in testing electrical circuits and making related adjustments; Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate employees; maintain operating records and prepare related reports; make quick decisions and use good judgment in the handling of emergency situations; skill in testing, operations and maintenance of fire alarm systems and circuits.

Date of Written Examination: Only those applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be notified of the exact date, time and place to report to the written examination.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Eligible List:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list/score report resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification. Conviction History

Disaster Service Workers
