This is a Position Based Test conducted in accordance with Civil Service Rule 111A.

Under direction, directs the activities of subordinate supervisory and various skilled automotive machinists, mechanical and other personnel engaged in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive, heavy-duty and off-road vehicles, other types of machinery and equipment.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
1. Supervises and inspects the work of shop supervisors, mechanics, machinists, welders, metal workers, painters and other personnel engaged in the complete overhaul, maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty automotive or other types of equipment and machinery, such as passenger, construction, fire-engine and emergency type vehicles, diesel, small engine lawn mowers and electric motors, marine equipment, machine tools, mechanical equipment, high pressure system machinery, blowers, fans, fittings, tools, other attached appurtenant devices and component parts.
2. Establishes job priorities and prepares work schedules in connection with various shop operations; oversees clerical and administrative functions, such as data processing, inventory control, bid estimates, purchases, invoices, statements; coordinates building security, maintenance and facilities management.
3. Requisitions new and replacement materials, parts and equipment for various shop operations, assures adequate inventory, reviews requests for special equipment and tooling, inspects all deliveries received to assure conformance with specifications.
4. Inspects shop work in progress and on completion to assure conformance with instructions and standard overhaul, maintenance and repair procedures.
5. Oversees administration of the operating budget for various shops; prepares and reviews cost estimates, material and time records and reports; creates estimates for new construction and major jobs that are to be sent out for repairs.
6. Inspects shop equipment, machinery and tools; assures that shops are maintained in a clean and orderly condition; directs the hazardous materials disposal program.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Nature of work: includes all shifts, nights, weekends, holidays and response to emergencies; physical effort, exposure to hazardous materials and working conditions where minor injuries may occur; prolonged standing and walking; occasional heavy lifting up to 50 lbs., manual dexterity, squatting, reaching, climbing and crawling, at heights, on streets and roadways. May require the ability to be fitted and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and pass a medical qualification examination for use of appropriate respiratory protection.
• High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. or High School Proficiency Examination).
• Eight (8) years of experience in the maintenance, repair, disassembly, installation and overhaul of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies in heavy duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment of which must have included two (2) years of supervisory experience directing a large group of skilled automotive machinists and heavy duty mechanics.
License and Certification:
• Possession of a valid Class C (or III) driver license.*
Applicants must meet minimum qualification requirements by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
*Must be able to obtain a Class A (or I) driver license with Medical Certificate upon completion of the probationary period. Failure to maintain the required license may be cause for termination.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

• Professional fleet management courses or certifications
• Strong computer skills to create and prepare spreadsheets, presentation tools, databases, correspondence, performance appraisals, complex operational, budgetary and inspection reports.

Supplemental Questionnaire (Qualifying):
Applicants will be prompted to complete a supplemental questionnaire as part of the online employment application. Basic Supervisory Exam (Weight 50%):
Candidates will be administered a written multiple-choice examination that is designed to measure basic knowledge of various supervisory practices and procedures (e.g. directing, counseling, guiding, evaluating, motivating, disciplining, developing and training subordinates, delegation, etc.) as well as customer service and reading comprehension.
This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.
The Basic Supervisory Exam will be administered either on a computer or in paper format. The type of format will depend on the size of the qualified applicant pool. Qualified candidates will be notified of the type of exam format in their exam appointment notification.
The score you achieve on this examination shall be valid and 'banked' for three years, starting from the date of the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. Please note this test is used for other supervisory classes therefore your test score may be applied to one or more of these classes if you choose to apply to future recruitments. If the test for this future announcement is held within one year of the date of this examination, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after one year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than one year from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score since it is the most recent.
Behavioral Consistency Questionnaire (Weight 50%):
Candidates achieving a passing score on the Basic Supervisory Exam will be sent a behavioral consistency questionnaire to complete and return by e-mail. This questionnaire has been designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include, but not be limited to: knowledge of the methods and equipment, operating and preventative maintenance requirements, related shop crafts, safety laws and regulations, used in the complete overhaul and repair of a wide variety of automotive and heavy duty machinery and equipment; ability and skill to coordinate and inspect the activities of subordinate supervisory and mechanical personnel, estimate time and material costs, maintain shop operating records and reports, communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, interact courteously and resolve conflicts, use office computer applications and apply automotive, other types of equipment and machinery maintenance and repair techniques to complex shop and field problems.
The certification rule for the ranked eligible lists resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list/score report resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification. As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:
