The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) is accepting applications in class 6139 Senior Industrial Hygienists. Positions are currently available at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center's Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety and Health Division, and Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center.
Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center is a large acute care teaching hospital which is the sole Level I Trauma Center for the City and County of San Francisco and offers a comprehensive range of inpatient, ambulatory, skilled nursing, rehabilitative and community oriented programs and is affiliated with the University of California - San Francisco. The Senior Industrial Hygienist will manage the hospital's hazardous materials and hazardous waste and respiratory protection program and will interact with all levels of staff, managers, and leadership to foster employee health and safety within the Center.
The Occupational Safety and Health Division of the Department of Public Health is looking for a Senior Industrial Hygienists to support DPH clinics and services, and provides overall technical guidance and consultation for the Department. The Division also provides health and safety support to several other agencies of the City and County of San Francisco and may also be looking for a Senior Industrial Hygienists to support one of these clients.
Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center is the largest skilled nursing facility in California and one of the largest in the United States, with over 7900 residents, 1,800 employees, on an 62 acre campus. The Senior Industrial Hygienist would manage the Workplace Safety and Emergency Management program which is responsible for employee health and safety and emergency preparedness for the hospital and will interact with all levels of staff, supervisors, managers, and leadership.
The shift is Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. -5 p.m. and may be required to work evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays on occasion.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, performs highly technical and complex industrial hygiene work in the development, implementation and enforcement of regulations and programs in relation to the identification, evaluation, control and prevention of workplace hazards. Positions in this class may function as first line supervisors and highly technical specialists in providing advice on the identification, evaluation, and control of chemical, physical, and biological agents, proper handling and procedure for the storage and disposal of hazardous substances, hazardous substances inspections, and emergency planning, response, demobilization, and preparedness.
The essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
May supervise a staff of industrial hygiene, health and safety, and environmental, public health, and support personnel. Supervision may include developing goals and objectives and monitoring progress;
Collaborates with all levels of staff, leadership, other CCSF Departments, and members of the public on health and safety issues and concerns;
Develops and conducts training sessions for personnel with potential exposure to chemical, physical or biological hazards;
Responds to hazardous material incidents and/or employee concerns by evaluating the situation and advising on procedures for handling containment and/or evacuation. Assist CCSF Departments with emergency planning and preparedness;
Investigates accidents, incidents, and/or employee concerns involving exposure to chemical, physical, or biological agents and ensures that effective corrective action plans are developed and implemented;
Develops, implements and maintains specific health and safety programs such as injury and illness prevention, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, heat illness prevention, asbestos, lead, silica, ergonomics, indoor air quality, exposure to blood borne pathogens and exposure to infectious disease;
Reviews and responds to complex questions and concerns from the CCSF staff and/or the community that may involve exposure to chemical, physical or biological agents;
Uses database to track injury, illness and exposure data. Ensures data is accurate and uses data to develop corrective actions;
Performs administrative tasks related to enforcement of ordinances, codes and other regulations;
Participates in advisory committees developing regulations pertaining to chemical, physical and biological agents;
Assists departments with regulatory agency inspections;
Maintains technical reference materials and records;
Compiles data and prepares reports;
Develops and manages a budget for programs or projects ensuring fiscal stewardship;
Tracks corrective action plans to ensure effective implementation;
Evaluates work operations and selects appropriate control measures, such as personal protective equipment; AND
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Possession of a Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health/Management, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. All degrees must have major coursework in Industrial Hygiene; AND
Four (4) years of professional industrial experience, which must include at least one (1) year of journey level experience equivalent to the level of City and County of San Francisco classes 6138 Industrial Hygienist or 6139 Senior Industrial Hygienist. Experience must have included professional industrial hygiene activities including either hazardous materials management or identification, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards; AND
License and Certification:
Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene as a Certified Industrial Hygienist in the comprehensive practice of Industrial Hygiene and
Possession of a valid California driver’s license. (California license must be obtained within 45 days of appointment)
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health/Management, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; AND six (6) years of experience as described above may substitute for the required education and experience.

NOTE: One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be six (6) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
