The Communications Division guides the SFPUC’s brand and promotes our agency’s programs, initiatives, and services to internal and external stakeholders. Our goal is to build trust and engagement among our employees, partners, customers, and the communities we serve through open and timely communication.
As the Deputy Director for Marketing and Customer Communications, you will be responsible for leading marketing and customer communication strategies, and exploring new ways to educate and engage customers in support the SFPUC's priority projects and programs. These may include, but are not limited to: water, power and sewer programs and projects, rates programs and projects, writing projects, advertising initiatives, press response initiatives, crisis management projects, internal communication projects, administrative projects and hiring initiatives. This leadership role will also be responsible for the oversight and management of the Communications Division and coordination of high-priority projects.
• Develops and implements comprehensive communications plans to promote key agency priorities as it pertains to Water, Power and Sewer Programs.
• Manages team of communications professionals, consultants and other staff responsible for designing and preparing communication materials and implementing outreach activities.
• Writes creatively for agency publications and press releases.
• Interacts with the press on a variety of SFPUC topic areas and serves as a media spoke person as needed or prepares senior staff for interviews and presentations.
• Develops appropriate messages, strategies, and innovative practices for priority projects and programs.
• Develops and implements crisis communications strategies and be responsible for managing crises as they arise.
• Manages advertising and marketing initiatives for priority programs in the Water, Power and Sewer enterprises.

Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Linguistics, or a closely related field; AND
Three (3) years of professional experience in communications or media relations, working within a diverse community.
· Six (6) plus years of experience in marketing or communications field;
· Experience in public affairs, digital/social media, or public relations, & marketing research/analysis
· Communications experience with communities where English is a secondary language.
· Experience developing messaging for top executives
· Experience in staff training or creating training materials
· Ability to manage client relationships at an executive level in a medium/large organization
· Ability to be flexible and manage multiple projects at the same time
· Detailed oriented
