This recruitment is for the General specialty. Under direction, is responsible for designing and preparing graphs, charts, posters, diagrams, final drawings, sketches, exhibits and photographs used in presentations, publications, multi-media and public information releases.
The essential functions of this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:
Designs layouts of reports, brochures, flyers, bookmarks, booklists, logos, newsletters, posters, forms, signs, and other printed material and selects appropriate typography, color treatment and paper stock using computer systems, desktop publishing software including illustration, web design, photographic retouching, and other graphic design software.
Performs specialized design, typesetting and pre-press work in connection with the preparation of presentation drawings, publications, multi-media, public information releases and similar media using computer-aided graphics.
Designs, executes and edits a variety of drawings and illustrations using computer-aided graphics.
Scans, manipulates and corrects photographic images to incorporate with desktop publishing software.
Uses desktop publishing software and appropriate computer hardware to produce graphs, charts and maps.
Communicates and interacts with departmental staff, vendors, staff from printers, service bureaus and color houses to assure quality reproduction of project designs.
Prepares sketches, graphs, charts, posters, diagrams, final drawings, exhibits and photographs either from direct consultation with staff members of from rough sketches.
Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Possession of an Associate in Arts degree (two year degree) from an accredited college or university with coursework in graphic art or design.
One (1) year of professional experience in graphic art or web design.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying)
Applicants will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire (Section 1) as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 50%)
Applicants will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire (Section 2) as part of the online employment application. Candidates will be evaluated and scored based on the information provided in their job application and supplemental questionnaire to determine their possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the 5322 Graphic Artist position. All relevant experience, education, and/or training must be on the supplemental questionnaire in order to be reviewed in the rating process.
Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Weight: 50%)
At a later date, candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent, via email, a separate supplemental questionnaire designed to measure knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to:
- Knowledge of commercial techniques and equipment
- Knowledge of various graphic design processes, methods, and techniques used in graphic design, drawing, illustration, and drafting
- Knowledge of typography
- Ability to use desktop publishing, illustration, photo retouching, web design and other graphic design software
- Skill to apply graphic processes, methods, and techniques
- Ability to plan, organize and complete graphic design projects within the deadline allotted
- Skill to prepare a wide variety of artistic media as well as sketches, lettering, painting, and drafting
- Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of individuals
A passing score must be achieved on the Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation in order to continue in the selection process. Applicants will be given a deadline to return the Supplemental Questionnaire. Those who do not respond by the established deadline will not be added to eligible list resulting from this process.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Ten Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
A confidential eligible list with names of candidates who have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established so interested parties can view the ranks, final scores, and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of candidates on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once that eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be twelve months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
