The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) is accepting applications in class 2738 Porter Assistant Supervisor. Positions may be located at Laguna Honda Hospital (LHH), Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) and at various clinics.
The eligible list resulting from this Class Based Test (CBT) announcement will be used to fill current and future vacancies in this class for the duration of the eligible list.
Shift: Work schedule varies depending on the position. Days, evenings, weekends, and/or holiday shifts may be required.
Under general supervision, the Porter Assistant Supervisor performs the duties of a Porter to maintain a large institution in a clean and orderly condition. They also supervise the work of a crew of porters assigned to clean and maintain institutional buildings. The essential duties include:
- Performs the duties of a porter in maintaining an institution in a clean and orderly condition;
- Assigns duties and schedules work assignments to a crew of Porters;
- Inspects and documents the work of porters to ensure that cleaning, safety and infection control standards are met;
- Checks time sheets and assignments of subordinates and reports issues to immediate supervisor;
- Trains and instructs new porter personnel by explaining and demonstrating cleaning methods and procedures to be followed;
- Supervises and/or engages in transporting, setting up and arranging furniture, equipment, and other items throughout an institution;
- May supervise and/or engage in the very minor repair and adjustment of tools and equipment used to perform the duties of the position, and reports the need for minor or major repairs of tools and equipment; and
- As directed, may perform the duties of Porter Supervisor I for limited periods.
The Porter Assistant Supervisor performs other related duties as assigned/required.
Working Conditions: The Porter Assistant Supervisor is expected to supervise and perform cleaning activities requiring exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, and other medical wastes, and/or patients with contagious diseases using approved safety procedures and special protective clothing and/or equipment. Work may also require physical strength and stamina in heavy lifting, standing, bending, pulling and pushing for extended hours throughout the day and/or night in surroundings that may be disagreeable.
Two (2) years of verifiable experience in an institutional setting as a porter, janitor, or custodian, performing all of the following duties: floor and carpet maintenance; furniture, equipment and wall cleaning or disinfecting; hazardous waste and trash disposal; and movement of furniture and other equipment.
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying):
Candidates will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Written Examination (Weight 100%)
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a written multiple-choice test designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas, which may include but is not limited to: Knowledge of safety procedures; Technical knowledge; Supervision; Interpersonal Relations; Reading Comprehension; Written Communication; Mathematical Ability; and Computer Ability.
The written multiple-choice exam will be administered in San Francisco,CA. Candidates must obtain a passing score on the exam in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on a confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final exam score.
This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.
Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
