The Library is now accepting applications for one (1) Temporary Provisional full-time position at our Engineering Office, Facilities Division in Class 7335 Senior Stationary Engineer.
Under general direction, the Senior Stationary Engineer supervises the operation, maintenance and repair activities of a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and process machinery and equipment in a large complex facility or in a multi-faceted facility. This position supervises the work of subordinate staff and performs complex and difficult engineering duties, and ensures that all equipment, machinery and systems are functioning normally and safely, and complies with all applicable safety rules and regulations.
Essential duties and responsibilities of the job include:
• Supervises subordinate staff and personally participates in the operation, maintenance and repair of pumping, ventilating and heating equipment, including fans, pumps, air-conditioners and auxiliary equipment; maintains and repairs elevators and specialized kitchen, laboratory and laundry equipment and facilities;
• Operates and maintains high pressure boilers, fans, pumps, refrigeration equipment, electrical generators, air compressors and various other mechanical and electrical plant machines and equipment; makes periodic inspections and tests of machinery and equipment to assure proper operation and determine the necessity for repair or maintenance; cleans, paints and lubricates plant machinery and equipment, as required; checks and repairs automatic temperature and humidity controls and replaces parts, as necessary; repairs and replaces switches and relays on control panels;
• Supervises the operation of automatic and manually controlled purification and water treatment equipment, including pumps, motors, chemical feeders and filters to control the quality and regulate the flow of water through a treatment plant; conducts water analysis under general supervision to maintain water quality and proper chemical dosage in filtration plant;
• Prepares shift schedules and work assignments for subordinate personnel; orders supplies, parts and equipment necessary for operation and maintenance activities; takes, records and computes various meter readings reflecting plant operations; answers emergency calls from various locations or departments in connection with heating and ventilating machinery and equipment breakdowns or malfunctions; makes emergency repairs or alterations in such cases; instructs other operating personnel in the proper operation of boilers, fans, heating equipment and boiler feed water treatment; and
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Nature of the work:
Essential Functions require considerable physical effort in the maintenance, repair and operation of plant machinery and equipment; the ability to lift heavy objects; exposure to working conditions where minor abrasions, bruises and burns may be encountered; occasional disagreeable work inside close and dirty spaces.
Education, Training and/or Experience
Five (5) years verifiable experience as a journey-level stationary engineer; OR
Completion of a recognized four (4)-year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship program plus one (1) year experience as a journey-level stationary engineer; OR
Graduation from recognized four (4)-year Maritime Academy plus one (1) year verifiable experience as a journey-level stationary engineer; OR
Possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of any horsepower plus one (1) year verifiable experience as an unrestricted licensed Marine Engineer for merchant vessels or one (1) year verifiable experience shore side as a journey-level stationary engineer.
License and Certification:
Possession at time of hire a Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency for working with heating and ventilating equipment (HVAC) or other refrigeration equipment using CFCs and HCFCs. AND
Possession of a valid current California Driver's License.
DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT:
Applicants for positions in this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by Stationary Engineers Local 39, are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident. Applicants with a positive result from a pre-employment drug test will be restricted from hire in safety-sensitive positions for six months after the date of the positive test.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential function of this job.

Appointment Type: Provisional Appointments
When a department needs to fill a vacancy that is covered by the civil service process, but no applicant pool of eligible employees is available, departments are allowed to hire Provisional (or temporary) employees. Provisional employees may not receive the same benefits as permanent employees and they may be "bumped" or laid off in favor of a permanent employee.
In order for a provisional appointee to be able to retain his or her job, he or she must apply to compete for a permanent civil service appointment when the job announcement is issued. They then must go through the permanent civil service job application process and need to be successful in a permanent civil service examination process to be considered for a permanent appointment.
