CLASS 7334 STATIONARY ENGINEER

APPOINTMENT TYPE:

Provisional Appointment (TPV). Permanent and Provisional applicants are encouraged to apply. Provisional appointees must be successful in the Civil Service examination for this classification in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three years.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

War Memorial Department is accepting applications for one (1) full-time position in class 7334 Stationary Engineer.  The War Memorial Department manages, operates and maintains the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center buildings and grounds including the War Memorial Opera House, War Memorial Veteran's Building, Louise M Davies Symphony Hall, and Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall.

Working Location: 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102.

Shift: The shift varies depending on the position. Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

 

Under general supervision, operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and auxiliary plant machinery and equipment in a large complex or multi-faceted facility. Ensures that all equipment, machinery and systems are functioning normally and safely, and complies with all applicable safety rules and regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Essential functions include but not limited to:

- Operate, maintain and repair a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and power generating equipment in a large complex or multi-faceted facility.

- Inspect and test machinery and equipment, fire prevention equipment, water storage and multiple distribution systems, high pressure zones, wood and steel storage tanks, pumps and relief valves, and samples of water

- Make entries and keep records on shift operation.

- Receive, record and store large amounts of treatment chemicals and may handle hazardous chemicals in confined or enclosed areas; must be capable of safely and properly handling chemical spills; may also include handling and treatment of industrial or hazardous waste.

- Contact, communicate and is required to deal with contractors, building tenants and/or the general public in order to be able to discharge assigned duties.

- Maintain keys, communications equipment, and security (in the absence of Security Personnel). As part of an emergency response team, recognizes, evaluates, and responds to potentially hazardous situations.

- Performs control tests on water samples; under supervision, conducts water analysis and regulates treatment chemical dosages; performs boiler water and cooling tower chemical tests.

The 7334 Stationary Engineer also performs other related duties as required.

Working Conditions:

Nature of work involves physical effort in the repair and maintenance of machinery and equipment; the ability to lift heavy objects; exposure to working conditions where minor abrasions, bruises, and burns may occur; occasional uncomfortable work inside closed and dirty spaces; exposure to potential uncomfortable weather conditions and traffic conditions; and requires physical stamina to stand, stoop, bend and climb ladders while working in confined spaces, entryways and tight crawl spaces. Some positions may also require the ability to operate both automatic and manual automobile transmission as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Experience: Four (4) years of verified journey-level stationary engineer experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of a variety of mechanical and electrical pumping, heating, air conditioning, ventilating and related plant machinery used in a government establishment, hospital, industrial, production or commercial building; AND

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License; AND 

Possession at time of hire a Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Substitution:
Any of the following may be substituted for the required experience:
• Completion of a recognized four-year Stationary Engineer apprenticeship program
• Graduation from a recognized four-year Maritime Academy with a degree in engineering or technology
• Possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of any (unrestricted) horsepower

Selection Procedures

The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

 

Applicants meeting the minimum requirements are not guaranteed advancement in the selection process.

Disaster Service Workers

Drug Testing Requirement:

Applicants for positions in this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by Stationary Engineers Local 39, are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident. Applicants with a positive result from a pre-employment drug test will be restricted from hire in safety-sensitive positions for six months after the date of the positive test.
