Temporary Exempt, Full Time – Temporary Exempt appointment not to exceed three (3) years. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
The SFMTA Transit Assistance Program (MTAP) is a three-year training program designed to offer security and customer service training to incumbents in the Public Service Trainee series. This training program provides an introduction to career objectives and mentoring by role models to incumbents while allowing them to learn about the transit work environment. The appointment type for incumbents is Temporary Exempt and will not exceed three (3) years. Some positions may be allocated for participants in special programs designed to reach disadvantaged individuals, those who have encountered difficulty in obtaining employment, or other special populations.
Under immediate supervision and in the capacity of a trainee, the 9910 Public Service Trainee serves as a Transit Assistant to Muni Operators and passengers. Incumbents ride on high-incident transit routes near schools and monitor for disruptive activity amongst students to deter and diffuse acts of violence and vandalism through the application of conflict resolution.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Arrives to work punctually and consistently.
- Attends daily roll call meetings to receive assignments.
- Rides SFMTA vehicles on designated lines and at specified times.
- Completes required daily report forms detailing completion of activities assigned.
- Works closely with San Francisco Unified School District personnel and School Resource Officers.
- Monitors specific transit lines around various school sites.
- Prepares reports and notifies supervisor on incidents of violence and disturbances.
- Requests assistance as necessary and as appropriate.
- Observes and reports any type of suspicious activity and/or behavior.
- Interacts with and provides customer service to SFMTA operators, the public, and others to reduce violence and disruptive behavior on SFMTA vehicles.
- Performs community outreach and participates in community violence reduction efforts including presentations at various schools.
- Participates in and successfully completes Public Service Trainee and Security Awareness Training.
- Performs other duties as required.
NATURE OF WORK:
- Must be available and willing to work varying hours, nights, weekends, overtime, holidays, and special events (i.e. San Francisco Giants games) as needed and as scheduled.
- Works in diverse communities and rides on various SFMTA transit lines throughout the City.
- Must be available to work under varied conditions, including inclement weather.
- Must wear designated attire as required by SFMTA.
1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent; AND
2. One (1) year of verifiable full-time paid or unpaid work experience, preferably in a community-based organization or other non-profit organization; AND
3. At least 21 years of age.
• One (1) year of full-time experience is equivalent to 2,000 hours.

• A community-based organization is a non-profit organization providing services to the community. Some examples of community-based organizations are: Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), United Playaz (UP), Arriba Juntos, Samoan Community Development Center (SCDC), and Young Community Developers, Inc. (YCD), Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), Tenderloin Safe Passage, Richmond Area Multi-Services, Inc. (RAMS), and Precita Valley Community Center.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.
- Experience in a community-based organization or other non-profit organization
- Experience obtained within the last five years working with at-risk youth or other disadvantaged communities.
- Experience obtained within the last five years in customer service.
- Interest in working for the SFMTA and/or in the transportation sector or strong determination to assist the public and community.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including having the ability to interact and establish a rapport with students and adolescents that may display disruptive behavior.
- Bilingual; fluent in English and a second language commonly used in San Francisco.
