Temporary Exempt. This position is excluded by the Charter (Category 18) from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the pleasure of the appointing officer.


Position Description

Graduate Summer Interns will work full-time, 40 hours per week, in an assigned San Francisco Police Department unit. Each intern will work directly with an SFPD Mentor who will supervise them with both daily tasks and larger scale projects. Interns will also be given the opportunity to tour various SFPD locations, meet SFPD leadership, and participate in other events aimed at professional development. Participating units may include: 

  • Chief of Staff Office
  • Community Engagement
  • Forensics Division
  • Fiscal Division
  • IT Division
  • Professional Standards and Principled Policing Division
  • Staff Services Division

Requirements

  • Summer Interns must be enrolled in an accredited college or university graduate degree program for Fall 2020 or have received their graduate degree within 2 years of the applications deadline.
  • Undergraduate transcripts (unofficial accepted) must be uploaded with the application.  
  • Proof of enrollment or completion of graduate degree (acceptance letter, transcripts, and/or degree) must be uploaded with the application.  

 Time Commitment and Working Conditions

  • The SFPD Summer Graduate Internship is full-time, 40 hours per week, 8am-5pm. 
  • The internship runs from 6/08/20 - 8/14/20 (10 weeks) and interns must be available for the entire time period. 
  • Housing and relocation assistance are not provided, and we do not currently offer any housing resources or housing search support. 

Typical schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. but may include weekend or shift hours depending on assignment. Upon completing the internship, there is no implied offer of extension.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Applicant must have completed a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; 

AND

2. Applicant must be entering or returning to their graduate program in Fall 2020; 

OR

3. Applicant must have completed a graduate degree within 2 years of application date.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement at time of hire (June 2020), unless otherwise noted.

Selection Procedures

Applications will be screened for relevant qualifying experience and education. Only those candidates who most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited to continue in the selection process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed to advance through all of the steps in the selection process. The department may implement screening mechanisms in order to determine candidates’ qualifications for this position.

Background Investigation:

Prior to employment with the San Francisco Police Department, a thorough background investigation will be conducted to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment. The investigation may include, but not be limited to: criminal history records, driving records, drug/alcohol screening, and other related employment and personal history records. Reasons for rejection may include use of controlled substances and alcohol, felony conviction, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to work with co-workers, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations or other relevant factors. Candidates may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening, and must clear Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting. Criminal records will be carefully reviewed; candidates who do not report their complete criminal records on their applications will be disqualified. Applicants will be fingerprinted.

Conviction History

As a selected candidate for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a selected candidate. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:

  • Candidates for positions with the Unified School District and the Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.
  • Candidates for positions with the Recreation and Park Department may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under California Public Resources Code 5164.

Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City.

Disaster Service Workers
