ABOUT THE TEAM: The Department of Technology’s Public Safety division operates and maintains several critical systems such as 911 Radio, Fiber, Engineering alert, crime prevention camera, burglar alarm, fire alarm call box and other similar systems.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, during an assigned shift, incumbent is responsible for dispatching fire apparatus and other equipment in cases of fire or emergencies; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for maintaining routine records of fire calls and movement of fire apparatus and similar emergency equipment. Requires good knowledge of: the operation and maintenance of fire alarm and telegraph equipment; city streets and fire company locations; the American Morse code. Requires ability to: follow oral and written instruction; maintain ordinary operating records; make quick decisions and use good judgement in handling of fire alarms and the dispatching of appropriate equipment. Requires skill in the operation of a telegraph key and fire alarm and radio dispatching equipment.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

a.      Receives reports of fires and other public safety emergencies and dispatches appropriate supervisor through the use of telephone radio and video communication.

b.      Receives box alarms and transfers to San Francisco fire Department radio dispatch; transmits extra alarms or requests for special apparatuses.

c.       Makes regular tests of all fire box and alarm circuits; uses line testing equipment in conjunction with two-way radio for detecting location of circuit faults; dispatches repair staff to locate and repair breakdowns in fire alarm circuits.

d.      Maintains station log of all activities during assigned shift.

e.      Monitors audio and video feedback from burglar and fire alarm devices on City property and facilities for police, fire, and ambulatory dispatch as needed; monitors various video camera system circuits and reports faults and emergencies.

f.        Receives trouble complaints for street lighting and traffic signals and dispatches appropriate staff.

g.      Monitors and reports video camera system function and intrusions

JOB TYPE: This Temporary-Exempt - As needed position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. These positions are for as-needed (on-call assignments), for up to a maximum of 1040 working hours.  In order to be considered for a permanent appointment, incumbent will be required to successfully compete in a Civil Service Examination when open positions are available.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     WORK LOCATION: Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, 1011 Turk Street. However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.

NATURE OF WORK: Incumbent must be willing to work on an as-need basis up to 1040 hours a year as determined by the department. Travel within San Francisco may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Experience:
One year of verifiable experience in a public contact position providing or soliciting information by telephone or radio such as positions with heavy public contact in answering complaints, telephone operations, or dispatching work; AND

Six (6) months of experience in the operation of telegraph instruments, including experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical circuits.

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
