APPOINTMENT TYPE: The General Services Agency Department of Public Works has one opening for exempt appointment in San Francisco. The position is excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process. The successful candidates shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer, with an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Class 5203 Assistant Engineer will assist the San Francisco Public Works' Curb Ramp Program to perform professional engineering work in the field and office, in the planning, design and construction of curb ramp projects. Major functions of this position include but are not limited to the investigation, preparation, planning and design for replacement, rehabilitation and Improvement work for curb ramps throughout the City, providing engineering support during construction phase of the projects, and coordinating work with other city agencies.
Under general direction, performs engineering and construction management work of intermediate difficulty in the field and office following established engineering standards, methods and procedures; conducts administrative work and makes periodic field Inspections of construction projects In progress to ensure conformance with plans, specifications and codes; checks and records work progress at various construction sites; prepares or assists in the preparation of reports, lists of materials, cost estimates, schedules and progress payments; prepares or assists in the preparation of departmental reports and reports concerning field conditions and the progress of projects; provides written and oral responses to a variety of inquiries from other agencies, contractors and the general public; assists In field investigations for projects and citizen Inquiries and requests; prepares correspondence and minutes; coordinates with other City Agencies to ensure that contract documents comply with the latest regulations and codes.
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.
a. Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from an engineering program with a major in the field of Civil Engineering, the specialty area defined for this position.
b. One (1) year of verifiable professional engineering experience performing at least three of the following tasks:
a. Preparing or assisting in preparing studies, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans using AutoCAD and other software tools
b. Collecting data to assess project needs and define project scope through site visits, surveying, review of existing documents, reports, drawing and manuals, performing measurements, collecting samples, or/and interviews with the stakeholders.
c. Preparing or assisting in the preparation of contract specifications, lists of materials, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments.
d. Preparing or assisting in the preparation of engineering reports and reports concerning field conditions, the progress of projects, the results of studies, and other matters.
e. Conducting data analyses and mathematical calculations, in order to determine type or size of material or equipment.
f. Conducting routine field inspections of construction and repair projects in progress to ensure conformance with plans, specifications and codes; checks and records work progress at various construction sites.
Note: Internships, drafting experience and student design work do not qualify as professional engineering experience.
c. Possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate issued by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
2. Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the field required for each specialty from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
3. Possession and maintenance of valid California drivers license (Class C).
Knowledge of: Preparation of technical engineering analyses/reports, design, utility design, and construction of right of way projects; and ADA accessibility requirements, issues and applications to construction in the public right of way.
Ability to: Communication with the public, management, clients, and other government and private agencies; use computer applications and software programs to perform studies and create designs and reports; use independent judgments within established policies and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
