A temporary exempt, as-needed appointment, this position is seasonal and will not result in an eligible list for a permanent civil service position. Employees serve at the will of the Appointing Officer.
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) provides opportunities for San Francisco residents and guests alike to gather, play, learn, relax and enjoy nature. We maintain more than 220 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces in the City, including two outside of city limits: Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierra. A vacation getaway for generations of families, as well as for first-time guests, Camp Mather remains RPD's inclusive, rustic, off-the-grid destination for recreation and relaxation.
About Camp Mather
Each summer, RPD operates Camp Mather, a rustic family campground located near Yosemite National Park, approximately 3 hours east of San Francisco. Each week, about 500 campers enjoy a week-long stay at Camp Mather; enjoying a full range of recreation activities such as a supervised swimming pool and a lake for water activities, supervised recreation programs, hiking, and evening campfire entertainment. Guests stay in cabins, and enjoy 3 delicious meals each day, served cafeteria style with a full salad bar and excellent service.

The 2618 Food Service Supervisor is distinguished from the 2606 Senior Food Service Worker in that the former functions as the first-line supervisor, whereas the latter functions as a lead worker and assists in the supervision of employees. In addition, the 2618 Food Service Supervisor is involved with administrative procedures such as scheduling, training, and policy regulation. At the Airport, the 2618 is distinguished from the 2706 Housekeeper/Food Service Cleaner in that the former supervises the Housekeepers/Food Service Cleaners.
Examples of Essential Duties
1. Supervises subordinate personnel and inmate help assigned to dining rooms; inspects dining room staff for personal hygiene.
2. Supervises the serving of meals, storage of food, and collection and washing of dishes, silverware and trays.
3. Checks dishwashing machines for proper operation; checks food refrigeration and warming equipment for proper temperatures.
4. Inspects dining room furniture and equipment for cleanliness and proper repair.
5. Draws foodstuffs and supplies from central storeroom; is responsible for issue and custody of same.
6. Recommends procedures for economical use and improvements of foodstuffs and supplies.
Working Conditions at Camp Mather
- Housing and Meals: during employment, FREE meals and housing is provided to camp employees. Camp staff live in shared housing with other camp staff.
- Nature of work includes working both indoors and outdoors, exposure to sun and high temperatures, and will regularly encounter bugs and insects.
- Work Schedule: The workweek is six (6) days, comprising of small shifts throughout the day. Shifts includes weekends and evenings. Overtime may be required.
- Work Location: Camp Mather is located in the High Sierra near Yosemite National Park about 3 hours east of San Francisco.
- Transportation: Camp Mather employees are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from Camp Mather. Parking is available for personal vehicles.
Available Work Assignments: Camp Mather operates in three phases. Applicants are available to apply for any or all camp phases, however, hiring priority for this position is given to those who can work the Early Crew, High Season AND Wrap-up Crew, in part or in full.
- April 21 to June 1 (Early Crew)
- June 2 to August 17 (High Season)
- August 18 to September 30 (Wrap-up Crew)
These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
Two (2) years of experience in the operation of a large, high-volume food service organization. Experience includes tray line operations, quality control, cafeteria/catering services, inventory management, or equipment monitoring in an institutional setting such as a hospital, correctional facility, cafeteria, long-term care facility, or other large high-volume food service organization.
