APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Exempt. In accordance with San Francisco Charter Section 10.104, exempt employees serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority. It is anticipated that these limited duration positions will last up to three (3) years.
The Department of Public Health’s Comprehensive Crisis Services is accepting applications for a full time position in class 2574 Clinical Psychologist to function as a Crisis Intervention Specialist.
San Francisco’s Police Crisis Intervention Specialist Team will deploy licensed mental health professionals to the scene of police encounters with troubled individuals as part of a new partnership between the Department of Public Health (DPH) and the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). The program strengthens and expands the city’s crisis response capabilities by providing a pool of professionals to support police negotiations, de-escalate conflict situations, and ensure that individuals are adequately assessed and provided mental health crisis services if needed. This team will support the de-escalation of conflict situations when police officers respond to individuals who may be mentally ill or under the influence of drugs or alcohol and pose a potential danger to themselves or others.
Comprehensive Crisis Services currently includes three (3) programs: The Mobile Crisis Treatment Team provides behavioral health crisis triage, in-the-field crisis assessments/interventions, and short-term crisis case-management for individuals age eighteen (18) years or older who are located within the City and County of San Francisco; the Crisis Response Services (CRT) program provides clinical support and linkage for individuals, families and community members affected by community violence and critical incidents; and Comprehensive Child Crisis provides 5150 assessments, crisis intervention and crisis case management services for youth up to the age of 18 years.
SHIFT/DAYS OFF: To be determined, but may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on call shifts. Shifts may vary.
Patient/Client Population: Youth, adults, and older adults with behavioral health issues and/or affected by violence.
Under general supervision of the Director of Comprehensive Crisis Services, the 2574 Clinical Psychologist functions as a Crisis Intervention Specialist and performs the following essential job functions:
- Collaborates with the SFPD; functions as a mental health professional in a police crisis situation and provides support to primary negotiators;
- Provides crisis intervention support and/or debriefing to individuals affected by a crisis situation (e.g., individual, family, SFPD, community members) to provide triage, crisis intervention, and consultation to victim(s), family members, and community members;
- Submits appropriate documentation according to State, Federal, County, and HIPAA standards and regulations;
- Provides culturally appropriate services and support;
- Responds to a culturally and socio-economically diverse population, located within a variety of neighborhoods/settings;
- Functions effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced crisis environment;
- Provides services in unpredictable and/or uncomfortable situations;
- Works with challenging youth, adult, and older adult clients (including dual and multi-diagnosed);
- Assists with and participates in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) with the SFPD;
- Conducts crisis assessments and initiates WIC 5150 involuntary holds when indicated;
- Provides advocacy and coordination of care (e.g. hospital, jail, etc.);
- Leads program evaluation efforts by gathering and evaluating data to document the program’s progress;
- Assists with quality assurance efforts;
- Provides therapy services;
- Participates in staff meetings and in-service programs;
- Oversees clinical services of staff and interns (e.g. psychodiagnostic assessment), as necessary; and
- Assists with backing up the other Comprehensive Crisis Services teams/programs.
The 2574 Clinical Psychologist - Crisis Intervention Specialist performs other related duties as assigned.
Possession of a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology as defined in Chapter 6.6 of the Business and Professions Code; Psychology Licensing Law, Sections 2900-2903, 2914.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Upon successful completion of 5150 training and testing administered by Comprehensive Crisis Services, the class 2574 Clinical Psychologist - Crisis Intervention Specialist employees will receive 5150 certification and must maintain it for the duration of employment.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
- Experience providing language interpretation services to clients who don’t speak English
- Two (2) years of experience or training in crisis support services
- Two (2) years of experience working with children and adults
- Two (2) years of experience working in a community mental health setting
- Demonstrated commitment to working with a multidisciplinary team
- Possession of a valid California’s Driver’s License
