The mission of the San Francisco Department of Elections (Department) is to provide election-related services to all City residents and to conduct elections that are free, fair, and functional. Serving approximately 500,000 registered voters, the Department administers elections in an open and transparent manner, making a concerted effort at all times to inspire public confidence in the integrity of elections in the City.
In preparation for the November 3, 2020, General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions to assist with providing election information to candidates, campaigns, voters, and the general public in person, over the phone, and by email. This position involves working directly with the public.
Position Schedule and Hours
The start date for this position will be either July 20, 2020, August 3, 2020, or September 7, 2020, and will run until several weeks after Election Day, November 3, 2020; exact end date will be determined by the operational needs of the Department in the post-election cycle.
Work hours are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, work hours will vary widely in accordance with the demands of the election cycle and will range between 40 and 70 hours per week. The person in this position must be available to work overtime both during the week and on weekends as necessary. Overtime hours will be paid at 1.5 the hourly rate.
This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12 month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. The ideal candidate is reliable, a team-player, and has experience learning new subject matter quickly and communicating that information to public audiences.
This position will assist candidates, campaigns, voters, and members of the public who visit the office, call or email the Department with inquiries about filing for an office, voter registration process, voting options, and other election information. When performing these duties, a person in this position will use the Department’s voter registration database, online tools, website, and other resources to provide information.
Typical tasks include:
- Providing election information, in a courteous and professional manner that is free of personal opinion, to customers visiting the Department’s office in City Hall, Room 48, through e-mail, and over the phone, while using several applications simultaneously.
- Assisting customers with navigating the Department’s website and online tools and filing paperwork.
- Reviewing and assessing candidate and ballot measure filing paperwork for completion and accuracy.
- Responding to campaign and voter inquiries and/or redirecting inquiries to the appropriate personnel when needed.
- Informing voters of their options to participate in the upcoming election and any relevant legal requirements.
- Facilitating observation tours.
- Assisting with various clerical tasks such as filing and scanning.
This position requires sitting and standing for prolonged periods, being able to multitask between phone and computer, and lifting and moving up to 25 pounds.

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. - One (1) year (equivalent to 2000 hours) of verifiable clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail: OR
- Six (6) months (equivalent to 1000 hours) of verifiable clerical experience as described in #1 and completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
- Six (6) months (equivalent to 1000 hours) of verifiable clerical experience as described in #1 and 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university.

As a selected candidate for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a selected candidate. Disaster Service Workers
All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, ranging from 7.5%-13.25% of compensation.
