Permanent Exempt (PEX), Full-Time, up to 36 months, this position is exempt from Civil Service rules pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section 10.104 and serves at the discretion of Appointing Officer. Appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service Examination process for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for a permanent appointment.
The Airport has a total of two vacancies: one vacancy in the Architecture section of the Planning, Design & Construction division, and one vacancy in the Aviation & Parking Management section of the Business & Finance division.
Planning, Design & Construction, Architecture:
Under direction, performs a variety of difficult and responsible architectural duties in connection with the investigation of building sites, preparation and coordination of preliminary and final working designs and drawings, and the preparation of related specifications for the AirTrain Weather Protection Project; may plan and assign work to subordinate architectural personnel; and performs related duties as required.
The essential functions of this position include:
Prepares and supervises the preparation of preliminary plans and detailed drawings for the AirTrain Weather Protection Project.
Develops finished designs of the AirTrain station platforms.
Conducts document reviews and prepares summary data reports on construction project change management compliance.
Analyzes and interprets data, sketches and designs and provides technical assistance to subordinate architectural drafting personnel engaged in such work.
Prepares and reviews contract specifications for the project; coordinates design activities with those responsible for the structural, mechanical and electrical design phases of the project; participates in meetings and discussions with representatives of City departments and outside organizations relative to design, specifications, and functional use problems.
Makes field observations to ensure compliance with contract documents; takes field measurements, documents existing conditions and incorporates data provided by other professionals, such as surveyors and geotechnical engineers.
Makes, coordinates, and reviews quantity and cost estimates; checks construction submittals to determine if contract specifications are complied with.
May be required to perform duties in connection with the architectural phases of interior design and construction management; when appropriate applies critical path method techniques to such work.
Assists in the development and advancement of subordinate personnel.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Business & Finance, Aviation & Parking Management:
Under direction of the Space Property Manager, as part of the Airport Space Planning Project, provides CADD support services for drafting and data collection, in addition to the development and the coordination of providing architectural space planning drawings and related coordination; attends meetings and conducts field verification of work; provides support for property managers in both the Aviation Management and Revenue Development & Management Departments; provides input and facilitates cross coordination and consensus building of Airline, airline service providers, government, cargo, concession, and Airport capital project support space needs and requirements.
The essential functions of this position include:
Supports and develops Airport space drawings requests including production of permit and lease drawings, composite drawings, as-builts drawings, Airport project drawings and automated space management applications.
Develops space drawings using computer aided software such as AutoCAD, Map3D, and/or Revit, in compliance with architectural drafting standards.
Supports and maintains Airport's space inventory database.
Performs field inspections for preparation of space drawings, as requested by Airport divisions.
Reviews Airport project and tenant permit drawings with property managers to validate lease lines of tenant spaces and improvements.
Uploads, indexes, reproduces and incorporates into databases and composite drawings as-built drawings obtained from tenants and Airport project teams.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or an architecture related field such as Environmental Design or Interior Architecture, or a professional degree in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture) from an accredited college or university.
Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the architectural field including architectural design, architectural detailing, construction documents, programming, preliminary cost budgeting, specification coordination and review, construction administration, and field observation of architectural construction projects, all under the direction of a licensed architect. One (1) year must have been served as a job captain, project lead, or in some role of increased responsibility and supervision on a project. (Experience in a lower-level class (i.e., 5260 or 5261) is considered qualifying.)
License and Certification
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred to hiring. Bullet points #1 to #6 are desirable qualifications for the position in Planning, Design & Construction, Architecture. Bullet points #5 to #8 are desirable qualifications for the position in Business & Finance, Aviation & Parking Management. (#5 and #6 are overlapping desirable qualifications for both positions.)
- Job captain on complex projects of significant budget and size.
- Experience working with interdisciplinary project teams of 1-4 people.
- Ability to work with a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
- Construction Administration experience on existing building remodels and ground up construction.
- LEED Accreditation or demonstrable experience with Title 24 Energy Code or Net Zero Energy Buildings.
- Demonstrable experience using Revit to deliver tenant improvement and vertical construction projects; skill with AutoCAD, AutoCAD MAP, or SketchUp.
- Experience with software such as BlueBeam, Adobe Creative Suites – Illustrator, In –Design, and/or Photoshop; Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal.
