Under general direction, is responsible for the operation and supervision of the traffic sign shop; supervises subordinate personnel engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of street, parking, and traffic signs; makes field surveys to determine need for traffic and street signs; responds to complaints and reports from the public and staff on undesirable traffic and street sign conditions; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for: Interpreting and coordinating methods and procedures relating to the installation, repair, and replacement of traffic and street signs; making regular contact with the general public, departmental personnel, and outside organizations in connection with traffic and street sign conditions; preparing requests for materials and supplies; writing reports and maintaining records.
The essential functions of this position include:
Plans and coordinates activities for a group of workmen engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic and street signs.
Supervises work activities in both, the shop and the field; makes field trips to inspect completed work.
Conducts and participates in field surveys to determine need for traffic, and street signs; reviews police accident reports and reports from Public Works personnel and the general public regarding same.
Prepares purchase orders for materials and equipment; arranges with Purchasing Department and vendors for delivery of items ordered; inspects items when delivered.
Responds to public complaints regarding the location of traffic signs and other special signs; attempts to accommodate public desires while maintaining utility of traffic signs.
Maintains records regarding monies spent on materials and equipment for traffic sign shop.
Checks shop drawings of proposed new signs; supervises the use of layout and silk screen techniques in fabricating new signs.
Nature of Work
Requires extensive computer work requiring keyboarding and prolonged sitting and working off a flat screen monitor to perform financial and economic analysis and analyze, manipulate and generate reports; ability to work effectively with managers, co-workers, contractors and other personnel; and ability to identify issues and problem solve.
Requires graduation from high school.
At least six years experience in the last ten years in the installation and maintenance of traffic and street signs, including two years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred to hiring.

Basic Supervisory Written Examination (Weight 50%)
Candidates will be administered a written multiple-choice examination that includes test items that relate to various supervisory practices and procedures (e.g., directing subordinates, delegating tasks to subordinates, providing customer service, demonstrating appropriate supervisory/leadership behavior, addressing and/or evaluating subordinate issues, behavior and performance, etc.) and well as reading comprehension items.
The score you achieve on this examination shall be valid and 'banked' for three years, starting from the date of the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. Please note this test is used for other supervisory classes therefore your test score may be applied to one or more of these classes if you choose to apply to future recruitments. If the test for this future announcement is held within one year of the date of this examination, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after one year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than one year from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score since it is the most recent..
A passing score must be achieved on the Basic Supervisory Written Examination in order to continue in the selection process.
This is a standardized examination, and, therefore, test questions and answers are not available for public inspection or review.
Oral Examination (Weight 50%)
The applicants who pass the Trades Supervisory Written examination will be tested to determine their relative knowledge, skill, and ability levels in job-related areas which may include, but are not limited to: Materials equipment, and techniques used in fabrication, installation, and repair of traffic and street signs; Laws governing the placement of signs, such as the California Vehicle Code, and San Francisco Traffic Code; Plan and supervise the work of subordinate personnel, deal effectively and courteously with the general public; Maintains records on expenditures and prepares reports; Skill in conducting field surveys of traffic conditions, reading blueprints; Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with staff, other departmental personnel and the general public as well as understand and correctly follow English instructions; Write reports or correspondence in a clear, concise and effective manner; Ability to use a computer refers to the basic ability to access, use, create, edit and save files using various software applications, such as word processing, electronic mail, and spreadsheets excel and email.
A passing score on both the Basic Supervisory Written Examination and the Oral Examination must be achieved in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.
Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential functions of the job and/or the ability to meet the physical minimum requirements.
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
The eligible list resulting from this examination is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be six months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification. As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:
- Candidates for positions with the Unified School District and the Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.
- Candidates for positions with the Recreation and Park Department may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under California Public Resources Code 5164.
