Definition

Under direction, the essential functions of the Crane Mechanic Supervisor are: planning, scheduling, prioritizing, assigning work and supervising the training and work of elevator and Crane Technicians engaged in the maintenance, repair and operational activities of elevators, escalators, dockside container cranes, mobile truck cranes, overhead bridge cranes and related equipment; inspecting work to be assigned, underway and/or completed; estimating/procuring labor, equipment and material requirements; coordinating work projects with other Port supervisors, craft workers, contractors and terminal operators; maintaining accurate computerized records for expenditures, timekeeping, damages, work tracking, scheduling, planning and crane utilization; monitoring and modifying computerized preventive maintenance program; arranging and conducting training for Elevator and Crane Technicians; and participating in the preparation of and monitoring the Elevator and Crane Maintenance section budget. This position is responsible for supervising the maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of electrical, electronic, digital, mechanical and hydraulic systems, diesel engines and remote telemetering monitoring of container crane circuits and components.

The Crane Mechanic Supervisor provides support during off-hours for rescheduling technical assistance and emergency response, and may reschedule use of equipment to suit the changing operational needs of tenants.

Distinguishing Features

This class is distinguished by its specialization in crane mechanics and its primary responsibility for supervising the work of a crew of Elevator and Crane Technicians involved in the repair, maintenance and operational activities of cranes, elevators, escalators and related equipment. An incumbent in this class reports to a Superintendent who has broad management responsibility within the Port's Maintenance Division.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Supervises, plans, schedules, sets priorities and assigns work to a crew of Elevator and Crane Technicians engaged in the maintenance, repair and operational activities of elevators, escalators, dockside container cranes, mobile truck cranes, overhead bridge cranes and related equipment.

2. Inspects work to be assigned, underway and/or completed in order to estimate labor, equipment and material requirements, to ensure progress is satisfactory, effective, and being performed safely and that completed job conforms to expectations.

3. Procures materials and equipment necessary for Elevator and Crane Technicians to perform their work.

4. Coordinates work projects with other Port supervisors, craft workers, contractors, and terminal operators to ensure projects are completed in an affective and efficient manner.

5. Maintains accurate computerized records for expenditures, timekeeping, damages, work tracking, scheduling, planning, and crane utilization.

 6. Interacts with tenants to coordinate maintenance and operational activities.

7. Available during off-hours for rescheduling, technical assistance, and emergency response.

8. Arranges and conducts training for Elevator and Crane Technicians to maintain and upgrade technical and procedural knowledge and skills.

9. Monitors and modifies preventive maintenance program.

10. Participates in the preparation of and monitors the Elevator and Crane Maintenance section budget.

11. Drives Port vehicles in overseeing work of Elevator and Crane Technicians, assessing proposed jobs, inspecting work in progress and inspecting completed jobs.

12. Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: elevator/escalator and/or container crane, electrical, electronic, digital, mechanical, and hydraulic maintenance components; and the operation, maintenance and repair requirements of high voltage equipment.

Ability to: plan, schedule, coordinate and supervise the activities of the Elevator and Crane Technicians; read electrical, electronic and hydraulic blueprints; maintain diesel engines and related parts; communicate effectively with a variety of people, including tenants, terminal managers and stevedore company representatives, with regard to scheduling and responsible use of Port equipment; train others in safe and efficient procedures of crane maintenance; prepare maintenance reports and records; use computer software designed to manage maintenance, generate reports, and communicate with others.

Skill in: use of tools and equipment used to maintain and repair elevators, escalators, container cranes, truck cranes, overhead bridge cranes and other lift equipment.


 

Experience and Training

Four years verifiable experience performing maintenance and repair on elevators and/or dockside container cranes OR Two years verifiable experience supervising a crew engaged in the maintenance and repair of elevators and/or dockside container cranes.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver's license and eligibility for coverage by the Port's insurance carrier.

Special Requirements:
The nature of the work requires the ability to work at heights of up to 250 feet and the physical stamina to climb cranes while carrying equipment.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
