Definition

Under general supervision, performs general metal forming, shaping, forging, fitting, finishing, heat treating and general fabricating, including general welding of various ferrous and nonferrous materials; does general anvil and power hammer forging work; heat treats, hardens and tempers metal parts and tools; operates gas and electric welding, cutting and burning equipment; and performs related duties as required. Nature of work requires: Sustained physical effort involving occasional heavy lifting, bending and working in confined spaces with continuous exposure to potential injuries despite maximum application of safety devices, procedures and concentration to the work.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

I. Forges, bends, shapes, welds, burns, forms and fabricates various metals from bar, angle, structural, sheet and wire stocks.

2. Does gas and electric welding, brazing, soldering, hard facing, cutting and burning of various ferrous and nonferrous metals and castings.

3. Details and lays out work prior to fabrication, modification or repair as required to accomplish assigned job; works from blueprints, shop sketches, drawings, patterns or models shown.

4. Lays out, fabricates, welds and repairs piping systems, tanks, containers and conveyor systems.

5. Restores, straightens and aligns damages, broken or worn vehicular and other equipment and component parts thereof; dismantles and installs equipment as required.

6. Modifies, reinforces, makes up and repairs both new and existing vehicular truck body and chassis sections, including special purpose and construction equipment.

7. Makes all necessary fabrication and welding repairs to shop equipment and maintenance vehicles.

8. Finishes metal parts after completion of necessary fabrication processes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires good working knowledge of: The use and application of various tools of the metal trades, including gas and electric welding equipment, forging and metal forming equipment; the physical properties of metals and the methods of identifying, heating and welding them.

Requires ability to: Work from blueprints, sketches, patterns or from models; to get along well with others; set up and adjust welding equipment. Requires a high degree of skill in the use and operation of blacksmithing and welding tools, material and equipment.

Experience and Training

Requires completion of high school, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in blacksmithing or welding with 3 years of recent journeyman experience in a position demanding the combined skills of general blacksmithing and welding, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
