According to Civil Service Commission Rule 9, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be inclusive.
1. Operates all types of welding and metal working machinery necessary to the repair and maintenance of all pipelines, pumping stations and water treatment equipment.
2. Lays out pipe and constructs pipe specials, such as offsets, bends, sleeves, reducers, tanks and meter batteries.
3. Performs repairs, by electric arc welding, acetylene welding, brazing or silver soldering, all types of valves, tools, leak pumps, construction and storage equipment.
4. Performs cuts, fits and welds pipes; repairs leaks and makes templates.
5. Manufactures emergency repair items, such as leak bands, tapping tees, gate rings and common vault cover.
6. Makes various types of mechanical pipe connections, such as threaded, flanged, flared and compression.
7. Constructs and maintains special truck bodies (PUC only).
8. Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge of: composition and properties of various metals and methods of identifying and welding them; various types of welding rods required by the type and weights of metals being welded; knowledge of welding symbols; knowledge of proper safety procedures and safe handling of welding equipment.
Ability to: operate welding equipment; set up and adjust oxyacetylene, electric arc, MIT, TIG, and other apparatus; layout necessary welding methods and equipment for pipeline repair of fabrication; measure, calculate, layout, fabricate and install various pipefittings.
1. Five(5) years experience as a welder using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding methods which must include one(1) year as a welder on high pressure pipelines.
2. Possession of a Class C Driver's License.
Substitution: One(1) year of training from a recognized trade school or union welding program in electric arc and oxyacetylene welding may be substituted for one(1) year of experience.
Special Requirements:
Work requires physical effort and manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body; requires continuous exposure to working conditions where injuries may be encountered; requires ability to work in inclement weather; perform emergency repairs nights, weekends, and holidays; must be able to work in damp enclosed places, heights (up to 220 feet) or confined spaces; climb in and out of ditches, and lift and carry 50 pounds.
