Definition

Under general direction, the Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for supervising the maintenance and repair of the wire rope traction cable and its related component parts for the cable car system; prioritizes, assigns, and directs the activities of subordinate mechanics and trainees involved in the maintenance and repair of traction cables and cable machinery components; plans and prepares schedules and work assignments, and reviews work orders; prepares reports and oversees maintenance of other documents; reviews and approves data entries; maintains inventory and oversees delivery of traction cable and all other related cable machinery components; advises and instructs staff; reviews and enforces safety requirements and makes recommendations; drives non-revenue vehicles as required.

Distinguishing Features

The 7286 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for supervising the maintenance and repair of the wire rope traction cable for the cable car system. This class is distinguished from the journey level class 7472 Wire Rope Cable Maintenance Mechanic by its supervisory responsibility for a group of wire rope cable maintenance mechanics and trainees.

Supervises personnel involved in the maintenance and repair of traction cables and cable machinery components.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1.    Prioritizes, assigns and directs the activities of a group of wire rope cable mechanics and trainees engaged in the maintenance and repair of traction cables, sheaves, tension carriages and other cable machinery components, utilizing available resources, in order to prevent breakdowns or correct immediate mechanical problems.

2.    Plans and prepares schedules and work assignments and reviews work orders; plans and schedules preventive maintenance and traction cable replacement.

3.    Prepares reports, and oversees maintenance of records relating to employee time, preventive maintenance schedules, data of repairs and cost reports. Reviews and approves data entries.

4.    Maintains inventory and oversees delivery of traction cable and related machinery components; prepares forms for ordering necessary materials; checks inventory and maintains records outlining the location of in stock materials.

5.    Advises and instructs staff on work methods and procedures; ensures that personnel receive required orientation and training; oversees and documents employee training records.

6.    Monitors, reviews, and enforces safety rules and procedures, and makes recommendations to improve established methods and procedures and to ensure conformity within department, professional safety guidelines, and practices.

7.    Supervises the activities of wire rope cable maintenance mechanics and trainees and evaluates the performance of subordinate staff, in accordance with civil service policies.

8.    Drives non-revenue vehicles as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: the methods and procedures involved in wire rope traction cable installation, predicted and preventive maintenance, and repair; the principles and practices involved in splicing traction cable (wire rope), and determining their various lengths and applications; the principles involving the safe use of sheaves, rigging, related wire rope and fiber rope components, and other cable machinery components; the tools, materials and equipment utilized in wire rope cable splicing and repair; the safe use of tools and equipment utilized to splice, repair and replace traction wire rope and wire rope slings, cable tension carriage rope falls, lubrication systems, sheaves, and other related component parts; heavy equipment rigging; the movement of machinery or equipment with slings; and the safe use of forklifts and overhead cranes.

Ability and Skill to: analyze breakdowns; analyze mechanical and cable problems and the effect to the entire cable system service, and to appropriately assess repair and service needs; plan, coordinate, direct and evaluate the work of subordinate staff; evaluate training and development needs and to ensure these needs are met; monitor and enforce safety procedures and regulations; and to maintain records and prepare reports; keep records of employee work hours, work-related incidents, maintenance and repair schedules, inventory materials, etc. utilizing related computer technology; drive non-revenue vehicles; comprehend oral instructions and directions; speak clearly and effectively; utilize related electronic communication technology such as 2-way radios and cell phones; read and comprehend written instructions and directions; write, in order to prepare written documents and reports.

Experience and Training

Four (4) years of journey-level work experience in the operation and maintenance of a wire rope traction cable system and its related component parts and equipment.  This must include experience in installing, repairing and long splicing wire rope traction cable.

Note:  Experience in electrical wire splicing, telecommunication cable splicing, fiber optic cable splicing or related fields, is not qualifying.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid Class C driver license.

Notes

Nature of work:  Some positions require work in confined, noisy spaces such as near large generators and sub-stations units; may work in hot environments and work in close proximity of others; incumbents are required to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

Disaster Service Workers

Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
