Under direction, supervises a crew of electrical line-workers and support personnel in the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground transit power lines and cables, and performs related duties as required.

 

The 7235 Transit Power Line Supervisor I is the first-level supervisor in the transit power line series. This job code is distinguished from job code 7366 Transit Power Line Worker in that the latter is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of transit power line systems.   This job code is distinguished from next higher job code 7274 Transit Power Line Supervisor II in that the latter is the second-level supervisor in this series and directs the activities of several field crews engaged in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground transit power transmission systems. 

Supervises transit power line workers and support personnel in transit power line work.

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1.        Plans, assigns and supervises the work of subordinate personnel engaged in the installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of high voltage (600 volts or more) overhead and underground transit power lines and cables. 

2.        Responds immediately to emergency breakdowns and makes necessary repairs.

3.        Reviews, supervises, and performs the installation of overhead lines, feeders, circuit breakers and other accessories.

4.        Makes field investigations of job sites/ existing facilities requiring alteration and relocation of transit power lines and related systems.

5.        Makes preliminary maps, sketches and drawings for new overhead and underground transit power systems.

 

6.        Prepares requests for materials and equipment.

7.        Prepares various reports such as performance evaluations, daily work logs, and other operational reports.

8.        Establishes and maintains contact with the departmental personnel, representatives of other departments, contractors, and the general public.

9.        Interprets, coordinates and enforces existing methods and procedures in the installation, maintenance and repair of transit power lines.

10.      Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge of: the methods and procedures used in the maintenance, repair and installation of transit power lines, and the use and care of the tools, materials and equipment; electrical theory including reading various electricity metering devices for determining voltage/amps/resistance, electrical testing and inspection procedures and practices; the application of all safety regulations stipulated by OSHA, Department General Order 95 and CPUC.

Ability to: read and understand maps, schematic drawings of electrical systems, and circuit diagrams; plan, direct, train and evaluate the activities of line worker crews, schedule and coordinate tasks or events, oversee the day to day operation of staff functions and activities, determine and establish priorities and set standards and meet predefined goals; convey instructions, ideas and policies in a clear, concise and courteous manner, read and comprehend written materials; listen carefully and respond to questions, concerns, and complaints; convey facts, instructions, and ideas in a logical, accurate and understandable manner in writing; and interact with departmental personnel,  representatives of other agencies, labor organizations, and the general public in a courteous and patient manner  using discretion and sound judgment even in hostile situations and/or under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications:  

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or licenses(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Experience:

Five (5) years of verifiable journey-level experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of high voltage (600 volts or more) overhead and underground power lines  of which 3 years of experience must have been with overhead and underground transit power lines.

Possession of a valid Class C driver license.  Employees will be required to obtain and maintain a Class B driver license within 6 months of appointment.
