Definition

Under the general supervision of the principal, patrols buildings, grounds and adjacent areas of school buildings; maintains order; prevents the entry of unauthorized persons; enforces rules, regulations, ordinances and laws; assists in the activities of the attendance officer where they relate to truancy; provides orientation for students on safety and security procedures; assists administrative and staff personnel in maintaining orderly conduct during school hours and may serve after hours at special school events; protects school department property against damage by vandalism and theft; notifies the school principal of situations that may result in disturbances in schools; as directed, cooperates with law enforce-ment agencies; prepares reports and memoranda; and performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features

A School Security Aide is responsible for carrying out and enforcing school department rules and regulations at a school site. Individuals in this class are given occasional supervision by a school principal. Employees are responsible for maintaining orderly behavior and safeguarding persons and property.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

1. As directed by the principal, patrols buildings and grounds of a school to maintain order and prevent the entry of unauthorized persons; acts to prevent injury to persons; screens individuals and groups entering school property to ascertain the nature of their business.

2. Assists in the control of crowds or other assemblies; takes charge at the scene of disturbances, accidents or emergencies; as required, notifies school personnel, school nurse, emergency ambulance, fire department and law enforcement agencies.
 
 3. Enforces Board of Education rules and regulations, municipal ordinances and state laws as they relate to behavior on school property; cooperates with the Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in coordinating security, pro-tective and investigative efforts; as directed, uses initiative in analyzing situa-tions and takes appropriate action promptly.

4. Gives information to students, faculty, the general public and others; locates persons on property; gives emergency aide to sick or injured persons; directs authorized visitors to proper location.

5. Assists in attendance office activities that relate to truancy.

6. Provides orientation for students on safety and security procedures.

7. May apprehend persons engaged in acts of illegal conduct; as specifically directed by the principal, may make arrests; investigates bodily assaults, accidents property damage, fire reports and alarms, law violations, disturbances of the peace and other incidents; gathers evidence for use by school administrators or law enforcement personnel; may appear in court as a witness.

8. Checks the security of school buildings and grounds; reports hazardous conditions, unusual circumstances; reports on theft, vandalism and other damage to property.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires knowledge of: Board of Education rules and regulations, state and municipal laws and ordinances. Requires some understanding of the growth and development of youth, community relations, the problems of minority groups and human relations in general.

Requires ability to: Take initiative and accept responsibility without close supervision; enforce school department rules and regulations and city and state ordinances and laws; think and act quickly, tactfully and maturely in emergencies; deal courteously, fairly and convincingly with students, faculty, groups, organiza-tion representatives and the general public; follow oral and written instructions; prepare accurate, clear and concise reports.

Experience and Training

Completion of high school supplemented by two years of full-time work experience and course work in police science or police administration; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

This class is exempt from examination under the provisions of Charter Section 8.300(a)(2).

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
