According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Assists in the coordination and implementation of a wide variety of art-related programs, including community arts, arts education, grantmaking, art object collections, civic design review, public art enrichment, street artists, galleries and other programs.
2. Assists in review of architectural plans and drawings in order to prepare architects and engineers for presentations to the civic design review committee.
3. Assists in the administrative review and aesthetic evaluation of art projects for inclusion in public building construction.
4. Assists in the design, planning, installation and maintenance of arts exhibitions.
5. Assists in the management of art galleries and community arts facilities/sites.
6. Assists in administering arts-related contracts and/or grants specific to the arts; assists in the evaluation of funding proposals from art organizations and individual artists.
7. Assists in monitoring expenditures, tracking accounts and maintaining the budget within organizational goals and objectives; assists in the preparation of fiscal reports.
8. Assists in the analyses of arts programs, proposals and projects by researching and reviewing related information; gathers, compiles, analyzes data and prepares reports using database programs, spreadsheets, various word processing applications, and statistical data; conducts internet research, and prepares reports for program evaluation; assists in the development of and recommends changes to rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
9. Assists in editing and publishing brochures, books, newsletters and other Arts Commission publications using desktop publishing software; designs and prepares web pages for the department's web site using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), desktop publishing applications such as Quark, Adobe PageMaker or other image and digital art software.
10. Creates automated presentations using slides, laptop computers and professional presentation software; converts slides, photographs and artwork into digital images suitable for inclusion in an image database or publication using a scanner.
11. Assists in cataloguing and tracking art object collections.
12. Assists Program Director in organizing receptions for new artwork exhibits and art related events; coordinates community meetings to discuss artwork in progress with constituents and stakeholders.
13. Prepares agenda items, schedules meetings, attends department meetings, and/or makes presentations at various types of meetings.
14. May supervise and evaluate clerical and technical support staff by assigning and reviewing work.
15. Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of: Basic principles and standards relevant to public sector art programs, such as community arts, arts education, grantmaking, art object collections, gallery and arts facility management, civic design review, public art enrichment, street artists and others; principles, procedures, and legal standards utilized in a variety of management and administrative functions, such as budget, contract/grant administration and facility management; aesthetic standards related to public art programs, art history, architectural design and other arts disciplines.
Ability and skill to: Apply management and art-related principles, procedures, and standards; prepare clear, accurate and well-organized written and/or graphic materials; effectively express ideas and communicate work-related information to a variety of individuals and groups; establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, the general public, and representatives of other departments and organizations; use a variety of work-related computer applications; gather and analyze information; prioritize and organize multiple assignments and projects; exercise sound judgment and appropriately refer issues to managers/administrators; understand and communicate aesthetic standards to non-artists in order to implement a quality art program, exhibition, or art project.
Training: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework arts administration, public/business administration, education, literature, architecture and design, art history, fine arts, or other fields closely related to functions performed by a public arts agency.
Experience: Six months (1000 hours) experience within the past 10 years in arts administration, community arts, public art, architectural design related to public art programs, and/or arts education, including visual arts, performing or other arts. This experience may be at the internship or volunteer level.
