Definition

Under general direction, is responsible for directing the operation of a college audiolingual laboratory; instructs students in the use of the facility; prepares, obtains and maintains tapes for the audiolingual laboratory; and performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features

This position is responsible for the operation of language laboratories and must have sufficient technical knowledge to operate and maintain a high speed tape duplicating system. The incumbent of this position is responsible for demonstrating initiative and ingenuity in assisting instructors in developing audiolingual teaching aids, developing tapes, preparation of materials and utilization methods. Positions in this class are primarily managerial and supervisorial and typically involve management responsibility for related laboratory support or teaching support activities.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

1.  Assists students and instructors in locating materials pertinent to the level of class instruction; listens to tapes and assists in their selection in consultation with instructors.

2.  Supervises laboratory assistants; arranges work schedules and assigns work; trains new assistants; submits departmental budgetary items.

3.  Advises instructors as to availability of tapes and other sources of materials in City College language laboratory; advises students in the use of reference materials.

4.  Orders and catalogs tapes; keeps records of tape acquisitions, and source of tapes; compiles and maintains files of tapes, indexes and records.

5.     Supervises and coordinates student and faculty use of a language laboratory.

6.     Maintains 57 stations and a high speed tape duplicating system in operating con-dition, properly adjusted and supplies with tape; secures and maintains stocks of raw tape, reels replacement parts and other supplies.

7.  Communicates with educators and other professionals to evaluate methods and trends in the language lab and audio fields.

8.   Meets regularly with audio-visual director and frequently with contracted vendors for maintenance and repair of machinery and systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires a knowledge of: the principles, practices and routine procedures of a language laboratory operation as related to the instruction of students and the acquisition of audio-lingual material pertinent to the level of instruc-tion required; play back equipment, records and tape operation and splicing.

Requires skill and ability to: operate splicer, reel equipment and small hand tools; make up new tapes in consultation with instructors; keep apparatus adjusted and arrange for needed repairs; supervise and direct the work of others; keep records and prepare related reports.

Note: This class is exempt from examination under the provisions of Charter Section 8-300(a)(2).

Experience and Training

Completion of a four year college or university with a baccalaureate degree and one year full time experience working in a learning or language laboratory, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
