According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Supervises first- level supervisors by planning, organizing, assigning, directing and evaluating the work of supervisors who direct crews engaged in planting, maintaining, pruning, and removing trees located in City parks, streets and City-owned land.
2. Inspects work sites to determine compliance with instructions, work schedules and safety procedures.
3. Enforces safety codes and procedures such as CalOSHA, the Code of Safe Work Practices, and other existing Federal, State, local and departmental codes and procedures, to comply with safety requirements; conducts safety training, including the safe operation of manual and power tools and equipment.
4. Monitors maintenance and repair of tools and equipment to ensure proper and safe use.
5. Keeps records related to urban forestry activities, and of materials and time expended, for planning and budgetary purposes.
6. Monitors and projects expenditures in order to assist with the preparation of the Department or Bureau's budget.
7. Represents the Department at Board, Commission, and community meetings.
8. Responds to inquiries and complaints and determines nature and provides a solution to the problem.
9. Communicates orally and in writing with own supervisor, departmental employees, other City representatives, or business and property owners.
10. Uses a personal computer to perform data entry, computer file management, e-mail and word processing functions.
11. Uses a two-way radio, cell phone or pager to communicate.
12. Maintains a valid driver license and drives a car, van or light truck to various locations.
13. May be required to operate equipment such as a chainsaw and aerial lift.
14. Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge of: established methods and procedures commonly used in arboriculture; safety procedures, including the safe operation of manual and power tools and equipment.
Ability to: supervise personnel engaged in arboriculture activities; promote, establish, and maintain effective working relationships; write and speak in a manner that is easily understood, and listen to and understand what is said; operate a two-way radio, cell phone and pager; operate a motor vehicle; use a personal computer; use hand and power tools and equipment; walk on hilly or uneven ground; and may be required to load, unload, lift and carry items such as tree limbs and equipment that is bulky or weighs up to 75 lbs.
