Definition

Under general supervision, supervises a moderate size group of transcriber typists, clerk typists, clerks and word processors to insure a continuous work-flow of transcribed medical-surgical reports; performs responsible and specialized administrative work in connection with transcription, processing and filing of dictated reports; and performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features

This class functions under the direction of class 2116 Associate Director, Medical Records and is distinguished from the latter class in that it has responsibility for supervising only medical transcription and word processing services, whereas the Associate Director has ongoing operational responsibility for an entire Medical Records Department. The Senior Medical Transcriber Typist is distinguished from the next lower class of 1440 Medical Transcriber Typist in that the former performs supervisory duties and provides administrative assistance to the Associate Director and personnel in other departments.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

1. Assigns, coordinates, supervises and reviews the work of medical transcriber typists, clerk typists and word processing equipment operators engaged in preparing various hospital reports; prepares statistical productivity and quality assurance reports.

2. Interviews and administers tests to prospective employees; develops training programs and procedure manuals for systems utilization by subordinates and medical records students; establishes procedures, and suggests quality standards.

3. Evaluates and recommends purchase and use of new dictation, transcription, word processing and typing equipment; maintains equipment in functioning condition and requests repair from technical representatives; requisitions and issues-supplies.

4. Receives and handles telephone communications; answers questions and helps transcriptionists with unclear and difficult dictation.

5. Operates Lanier Supervisor III Management Console to maintain control and flow of dictation and transcription of reports.

6. Utilizes word processing equipment in the input, retrieval, transcription and display of data; independently performs complex word processing activities involving text editing, merging and producing of information which require substantive knowledge of the specialized medical field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires considerable Knowledge of : medical terms and their meanings; methods, procedures and techniques used in modern transcription and word processing offices; use, capacities and trends in dictation, transcription and word processing equipment applications and document format designs; English sufficient to make corrections in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Requires ability to: select, train and evaluate subordinate personnel, exercise sound judgment in resolving disputes and differences arising with subordinates, medical staff, administration, and other personnel; maintain hospital records, reports and other data pertaining to transcription and word processing.

Requires considerable skill in: verbal communication; sufficient skill in typing to complete 50 net words per minute; skill in use of dictation, transcription and word processing equipment.

Experience and Training

Requires two years of responsible experience as a medical records transcriptionist, including one year of experience in a medical center, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
