Definition

Under the general direction of the Officer in Charge, incumbents in this class are responsible for the overall operations of the crime scene investigations unit; supervises assigned personnel in all phases of crime scene investigations and related procedures.

 

Supervision Exercised

Incumbents in this classification perform full supervisory responsibility over subordinate police officers.

 

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

  1. Manage, supervise and coordinate activities of the CSI Unit; determine work procedures, determine methods for expediting workflow.
  2. Directs and/or participates in complex/major crime scene investigations.
  3. Ensure consistent interpretation and application of laws, rules, policies and procedures.
  4. Ensure professional and accurate preparation of court displays and presentation of evidence in court; teach and demonstrate to others how to prepare and present expert testimony.
  5. Prepare or review correspondence, reports and other documents; respond to requests for a wide variety of information generated by other agencies.
  6. Formulate, develop, ensure implementation of and provide continuous review of Unit goals and objectives. Analyze, develop, recommend and/or determine improvements to ensure continued operation and system(s) effectiveness.
  7. Provide expert guidance, instruction, and/or information to staff, district station staff, academy classes and others as appropriate in formal and informal settings regarding CSI Unit’s work.
  8. Provide expert courtroom testimony in all phases of the job including crime scene reconstruction, trajectory analysis, blood pattern identification and evidence techniques.

Knowledge of: Crime Scene Investigation best practices;

Ability and Skill to: Expertly testify on crime scene reconstruction and fingerprint identification

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Education:

 

Experience:

Sworn members of the SFPD who have completed probation and three (3) years of experience with the SFPD at the rank of Q-35 Assistant Inspector, Q50 Sergeant or 0380 Inspector. AND

Five (5) years of experience as a sworn member of the SFPD assigned to Crime Scene Investigations.

License and Certification:

Latent Print or Crime Scene certification by the International Association for Identification.

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
