Definition

Under general direction to develop, plan, organize, direct and manage the inmate services programs for the Corrections Bureau of the Sheriff's Office.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is responsible for managing the overall functions of inmate programs and services; development of inmate programs for transitional success and to reduce recidivism; personnel management; budget preparation; administration of the Inmate Welfare Fund; development, coordination, and management of all inmate programs; administration of contracts and grants associated with the delivery of inmate programs. The Inmate Program Manager class differs from the Program Coordinators in that the former is a supervisor and is responsible for programs and services with significant program and administrative responsibilities.

Typical Tasks

  • Plans, develops. implements, and evaluates the functions of several comprehensive educational, rehabilitation programs offered to inmates;
  • Interviews, hires, supervises, trains, directs and evaluates the work of program staff;
  • Ensures the establishment and compliance of program policies and procedures to meet all applicable statues, standards, legal mandates, court orders and departmental policies;
  • Develops visible and recognized partnerships with community organizations, county departments, law enforcement agencies and other legal organizations to coordinate and enhance transition opportunities for inmates;
  • Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures related to casework, custody or rehabilitee work coordination;
  • Makes budget recommendations and monitors and controls expenditures and inventory;
  • Develops and delivers written and oral presentations to internal and external agencies;
  • Keeps abreast of new trends and developments that impact inmate welfare legislation;
  • Represents the department at conferences and in contacts with representatives of government and public and private agencies.

•Input, access and analyze data utilizing a computer terminal

Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

Three years of administrative experience including one year of supervisory experience in developing, planning and organizing rehabilitation programs or services for persons in a correction/detention setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's license or the employee must be able to provide suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.

Ability to pass a background investigation.
