Typical Tasks
- Tasks may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Patrol park facilities and land areas under the jurisdiction of POSCS to provide visitor services, preserve natural resources, and maintain a safe recreational environment;
- Report law violations and injuries to the appropriate authorities;
- Enforce County park rules and ordinances by issuing verbal warnings or notifying appropriate authorities;
- Issue parking citations in authorized areas;
- Participate in and/or respond to emergency situations and assist in resolving incidents;
- Administer first aid and CPR;
- Interpret natural and historical features of the park to visitors;
- Answer questions and explain park policies and regulations;
- Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and suggestions, and refer information to appropriate sources;
- Collect fees, issue receipts, and account for collected funds;
- Gather park census data;
- Prepare written work logs, schedules, and incident reports;
- Inspect and maintain cleanliness of park facilities;
- May assist in the rescue of animals;
- Act as a lead worker over seasonal employees;
- May assist in training seasonal and new employees.

- Some knowledge of first aid, rescue, and resuscitation techniques.
- Some knowledge of effective public relations.
- Some knowledge of the principals and practices of natural resource conservation, park operations, or park visitor management.

- Communicate effectively with park staff, visitors, law enforcement agencies, and a variety of community groups.
- Deal tactfully and effectively with uncooperative or angry individuals.
- Understand, apply, explain and enforce park ordinances, rules and policies.
- Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

- Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

- Ability to swim may be required for some assignments.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be: One year of work experience which has involved interacting with the public in explaining rules or regulations, and tactfully dealing with hostile or angry attitudes; or two years of college level course work in park administration, forestry, public recreation, natural resource management, or a related discipline. License and Certificate Requirements: Possession of a valid California class C driver license is required at the time of appointment. Possession of valid Basic First Aid and CPR certificates within the first six months of employment.
Other Requirements: Fingerprint and records check will be performed for all incumbents in this classification. Park Services Officers will be required to wear a prescribed uniform and conform to personal grooming standards. Park Services Officers will be assigned to various park locations, and will be required to work rotating or irregular shifts.
